Floor Jack Recommendations

Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable floor jack to use for wheel changes? I'm assuming I should get a 3 ton jack. I was originally going to just go with a Craftsman but the reviews about build quality have scared me a bit. It's hard for me to justify spending $400+ on something like a Hein-Werner though just for seasonal wheel swaps.

I got this jack on amazon. The Harbor freight goes up to 19" while this one does 24". Its an awesome jack.

I run the 3ton and its been good for 2 years and gets alot of use and dragging around the garage. Lasted alot longer than my previous craftsman for alot cheaper.(can be had for 79 most of the time)

solid jack. the only thing is that HF's "racing" line is made of aluminum, this guy is made of steel. albeit cheaper, in the end, i couldn't even lift the damn box for the steel model. so i said fuck it and shelled out a little more for the aluminum (blue) one

A 2-ton is more than adequate. You're not going to be jacking up the whole car.

Pinch weld adapter pucks solve this and Dem to add stability as well.

I got a set off eBay. I think I paid around $25. I haven't used them on the SQ5 yet, but they have worked well on the S4.

You can't go wrong with the HF jacks. Might be the only thing I have ever bought there, probably will be the only thing too.

It looks like Harbor Freight is the way to go. Thanks guys. I was thinking 3 ton figuring it might last a bit longer. It will be sitting in my in-law's garage for the most part so not too worried about mobility with it. Now to find a decent jack pad.

This is a potentially dumb question, but is the idea of the adapter to have the force distributed to the area around the pinch weld or just so that it spreads it evenly across the pinch weld?

And anyone happen to have measurements of the width/height of the pinch weld on our cars? I won't see my car until the weekend.

I've been not using pads since forever. I have a thick piece of scrap rubber I use, and also will fold towel over a few times.

You can't go wrong with the HF jacks. Might be the only thing I have ever bought there, probably will be the only thing too.

Pretty sure I have the 3 ton as I have a 2 ton Craftsman alu.

I just ordered the Burger Motorsports jack pad. I guess I'm a sucker for anything advertised as billet aluminum. I'll report back on how it works once I get it and a HF floor jack.

+1 for the harbor freight aluminum jacks. Just don't get the 1.5 ton model; it doesnt go high enough.

The 3 ton is the business though.


On a side note, harbor freight has good and bad stuff. You just gotta read the reviews.

I got a red cart/toolbox and that thing is boss. Waaaaayyyyyy better than any other tool box 150$ will buy. Ball bearing drawers and included mats. Even has a flat top to use as a work table.

+23487343 on HF .. actually rocking Harbor Freight 1.5 Ton low profile with a urethane jack pad adapter and wheel chocks. Also have a 2 Ton craftsman, but have been using the rapid pump HF more nowadays.

You should click his link.. Clearly says steel in title. Their lightweight alum one is a waste of time compared to the linked one. It works but expect to replace yearly.

Great thread. I'm still rocking my dual Craftsman 2-tonners that were gifts...at the same time, from different people. Anyway...I would be all kinda' grateful to anyone willing to post close-up worm's-eye shots of front and rear jack points, with or without the hockey pucks.

I was all set to order a HF floor jack, but I'm having some second thoughts given the not-particularly-confidence-inspiring 90 day warranty. If I get a Craftsman, I've at least got the one year warranty plus an extra year from Amex. My billet aluminum jack pad adapter gets here this week at least!

I was gifted an Arcan 3.5 ton floor jack which has been great. Except...I realized yesterday changing my brakes (S4) its too wide to fit both the jack and a jack stand below on the jack points. Just by a hair.
