    Driver Assistance saved the day!

SO I have had my A7 since November last year and while shopping I said the Driver asst. wasn't necessary. Well my view on that has changed now that I have had it work for me in assisting in collision avoidance.. Needless to say, NY traffic is a PITA and constant traffic plus stop and go. Well today while making a bone head move, decided to look down and reply to an email(I know poor choice..I am sure we have all done it) traffic was rolling at about 30/40mph and it suddenly stopped. Well with Audi pre sense it literally helped me avoid a terrible rear end accident in which I would have ripped right into this ladies rear. Lady in front of me stopped and I was still rolling. My pressure applied to the breaks definitely would not have mitigated this crash as I was damn there touching her bumper when I finally stopped. Moral of the story is, get the driver assistance package you will thank yourself later when it is used!!
I am still not sold on night vision, but what the hell I have it so maybe one day I will avoid hitting a deer lol

No we don't all email in traffic while traveling at 30 mph.

Not saying it's a good idea but occasionally I activate adaptive cruise control in bumper to bumper traffic on straight road so that I can text or send IM to people. It's that effective.

I dont know, I also reside in NY and in bumper to bumper I always wonder if it will stop in time when somebody cuts you off to get in the lane. Even traveling at 3-5 mph when they start to merge the car keeps driving as if not really seeing the car until it's almost dead center in the lane. I usually end up braking as i feel no intervention from the car at that point.

PS STOP TEXTING and/or Emailing while driving.

I know. Usually I don't do that but sometimes it just happens that i have to respond or contact someone. About what you wonder, it will stop in time. In fact in emergency situation like that it will stop quicker than I could actually react too.

Maybe silly question (just got my S6 C7 avant), but it as the adoptive cruise controle, lane assist, etc... Afaik it also has the pre-sense assist (front-rear). But i couldn't find info if it had break guard too. Yesterday while playing in the car i was pressing the ESP button..pressed it +5 sec and noticed it mentioned, 'break guard off' so i guess it has the break guard feature too.
But i was wondering, does this feature also works at lower speeds and when driving without cruise controle on?

Yes the brake guard works with or without adaptive cruise control on. If it senses a collision it will slam on the brakes to try and prevent a crash.

The braking guard worked for me very well also when someone cut me off and slammed on the brakes. Definitely reacted much faster than I could ever have. Love ACC as well.

Worked well for me too. Had a few occasions where some idiots did exactly that. Cut in last minute and slam on brakes. It applies the brakes much harder and faster than you normally would. I think we tend to ease onto the brakes where as the brake guard slams on it when needed.

For those that haven't had it activate, the dashboard screen says brake guard engaged with a big red warning.

Tbh- brake guard is just fucking great. However, a coin has two sides. So there are instances where in the mid of an aggressive right lane overtaking move, the pre sense plus plays with me and hits the brakes. But even with that, the driver assistance package is on the must haves list for me.

Brake Guard not only helps while you are texting, it also works great while driving drunk.

Activate lane assist and you can also take a nap. Just kidding don't do that. Very dangerous.

While these features are great, I sometimes think these things make us dumber drivers. Save us from accidents I guess. Like agent47 said, there's two sides to the coin.

my night vision saved me already from a dead deer and a smashed front (twice!, after 1 year of ownership).. I usually drive a lot during night and when there is a car coming at You, his lights blind You pretty well, so I did not see a thing in front of me for a couple of seconds, and there was a huge deer standing in my lane, I saw him in the night vision, so I slowed down, but when I looked in front of me, I did not see a thing! so I knew the deer was there, but was not able to see him with bare eyes until I was like 15 meter away (no way I could react that fast as I was going arround 50-60 mph).. at that time I realized how good the NV is :)

I drive over 22K miles/year and in my experience using the phone (texting or talking non-hands free) is the biggest threat to safe driving during the day and drink/drugged driving is the biggest threat after happy hour through 3AM.

I do that too - usually on conf call while sitting in traffic but why not have that extra bit of security.

Stay off the darn phone. learn to use voice activated texting if you must. eyes outside the cockpit please.... as a former military aviator, operating a helicopter in the weeds, having multiple radios, I do my best to even stay off the phone while driving, and I am used to and trained in applying those coordination skills. If I'm fearful of the moment I lose awareness, most other people aren't nearly capable of maintaining the required attention, you think you might be but you aren't. Sorry to burst your bubble. Also, I don't trust technology to be my first option in saving my life or the life of others. I alone am the first, most capable option in protecting my own life. And if you are consistently in a position where you absolutely need the tech to save your a$$, learn to drive safely and have some situational awareness.

I'm rural and use night vision every time that the headlights are on. It's rare when I don't see deer when coming home. Night vision is great for seeing the area around and behind an approaching car. I can check much further than the range of the headlights and it does show which way the road curves. A quick glance is all that's needed after cresting a hill or approaching a car.

Well said but learning to drive safely and having situational awareness is not necessary to get a license, you only need to be able to find a DMV to be qualified here in California (and it may not be better elsewhere).

We really should adopt the German licensing standards. I'm probably sounding like a "nanny" but I say all of this so we could eventually legally drive as fast as reasonable in the left lane of certain highways in the USA. I wouldn't want to do it now even if I could because, while I trust ME, I don't trust others.... and DB22, it's no better anywhere else. I'm tired enough of playing frogger in the supermarket parking lot because people insist on texting in the pedestrian walkways.

Seriously, who on here wouldn't want to safely stretch the legs on their beautiful Audis without fear of the police or some idiot veering into your lane at 120mph. You must have a reasonable foundation of standards if you expect a minimum level of performance. Our driving standards: "fog this mirror please"..."here's your license".

I hear that some people turn off the Lane Keep Assist because the steering wheel fights you when you make a lane without indicating!
BTW if you don't indicate a lane change or a turn then you are not considered a good driver in my book.

I almost always activate adaptive cruise control in stop and go or speed-up-and-slow-down situations.

But not so that I can text or phone or otherwise lose SA. I use it as another tool that adds another safe cushion (see, autopilot for the pilot in the thread) and that lowers my frustration level (thereby allowing me to concentrate *better* on the task at hand).
