Replacing one tire only on Quattro OK?

    Hi there,

The tire guys ripped one of my rear tires, and now they're replacing it. I drive an Audi s5 (2014, quattro is standard). My current tires have 7/32" tread left in the remaining rear one, and 5/32" in both the front ones. Would replacing one tire be OK? I've heard some mixed opinions on this - some have said that it should be fine, while others have said I should shave the new tire to match the existing tires.

If I should shave it, what should I shave it to? 9/32"? 7/32"? 5/32?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like you haven't been rotating (or not in a while) between the fronts and rears. That said, new tires come with 10/32" tread depth, so that may cause quattro to throw a fit. I have personally gotten a tire via Tire Rack shaved down and it worked like a charm. Shaving it to match the other rear will ensure that when you do rotate them, the fronts will match and the rears will match.

    Best of luck!

Shave it, at their expense of course.

Quattro's tolerance is 4/32" tread depth difference between all for wheels. You are gonna be 1/32" out of tolerance with your front tires and the brand new rear tire. Have it shaved to 7/32" and then rotate your tires, so you get some more even wear.
