    Any idea what to check?

I have a 2008 B7 A4. 150k miles. Check engine light on with a couple codes. -cooling system performance, evap leak. They may not be related, but both are on. Cars runs fine. It has trouble starting when hot. Starts fine cold, then if I shut it to get gas, or go somewhere, it cranks and cranks before finally turning over. Any idea where to look?

    Thanks in advance.

Cooling system performance could be caused by a bad thermostat or coolant temperature sensor. Does your coolant temperature gauge needle stays in the middle while cruising on a highway or it drops? Can you post the exact error code?

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have determined that it is not hard starting when hot, it's after I get gas. I also noticed a couple of days ago I got a message saying close gas cap, even though it was closed.

As far as the temperature, in traffic it will hover around the middle of the guage, but when I pick up speed and cruise on the highway, it drops down to around a quarter (I forget the actual temperature but I can check). Does this sound like the thermostat?

Yes. Definitely the thermostat. That temp gauge should fairly quickly run up to the middle and stay pegged there 100% of the time once the engine is warmed up. Might not be related to your other issues (EVAP leak and starting). As others have said the N80 EVAP purge valve is a good and cheap place to start for the EVAP issue.
