2012 Audi A4 72k Shop Says Needs New Engine

    All,

Long time lurker but haven't posted that much but my "new to me" Audi has issues. I apologize if too much information but could use any guidance to make sure I make the right decision going forward. In October of 2014 I purchased a used Audi A4 2012 with 59K miles. Now it has 72k miles, taken care of and babied. No aftermarket no mods.

No issues other than replacing the faulty PCU (November 2015). It burned a tab bit of oil but nothing at the levels to cause concern as mentioned here.

There were no issues or check engine lights until yesterday when I got a P0016 error. The car took 1-2 seconds to turn on. I only drove it home, and it felt under powered, from work and took it to a very reputable repair shop today. When filling out paperwork my Automatic App said also code P0299 (supercharger or turbo under boost condition).

The repair shop looked it over and called back starting he also is getting errors for misfires in cylinders 1, 2, and 4, the camshaft position sensor error, "charge pressure control valve", and said the engine is not getting any compression and is experiencing heat soak. Granted, I was in shock a baby of a car has an issue requiring a new engine. I may have misinterpreted the message but he said they could try a new cylinder and timing chains but pretty much guaranteed me a new engine was needed.

Has anyone heard of any issues like this? This Audi is my first nice car (always driven older cars with way more miles without engine failures) and I am just shocked this could happen. I have an appointment for the dealership to look it over because I think there is something screwy that Audi maybe should cover if a car is dying this early.

What questions should I ask? What am I in for if someone has had similar issues? Any helpful advice is appreciated.

    Thanks.

Sounds possibly like a chain tensioner failure although they are more rare in 2012. The b8 2.0t tensioner grenading an engine is otherwise a weekly occurrence here. Did they mechanically verify it jumped timing?

The PCV also fails frequently but usually it's only the $17 diaphragm that needs replacing.

Having the dealer look at it is the right call. They probably see one of these pretty frequently.

Yea, when you got the p0016 you shouldnt have tried starting thr car.. I guess its another case of a tensioner failing. Try calling up some dealers in the area. See if they can do anything for you since its such a low mileage car.

Keep us updated please. I might buy a 2009 A4 and may run into the same problems.
Did you take it to NGP at first?

In Canada Audi of Canada are useless in providing any sort of help dealing with the issue of oil consumption. You don't have complete history record or even miss a few oil changes you're SOL.In the US it seems most are offering goodwill repairs even if the history isn't complete, over KM or lack of oil change records.I know three Audi owners and all got deny because lack of complete maintenace records.

Goodwill happens less and less now because of the lawsuit.
