    Tinted pano

Looking to ceramic tint the pano sunroof. Tinted recommend not to as he's seen then crack but not specifically Q5/SQ5. I know he's just being cautious in warning me.

Those who have tinted it, any issues linked to the tint? Would be Pinnacle Ceramic.

I did mine, not ceramic, but very dark (maybe 20%).

    No issues, thus far.

What would it crack from? A piece of ceramic film shouldn't have any more or less impact on the sunroof than it does the other pieces of glass IMO.

Not a pano roof, but I had my sunroof panel tinted with 3M CR40 when I had the windows done; I like it, and no mention of any type of cracking.

yeah i'm highly considering the pinnacle 50. or whatever the lightest one is... its still got like 45% heat reduction so i think it should help considerably.

Are you tinting primarily for heat rejection? I have Pinnacle 50 on my side and back windows but used Llumar Air 80 for the windshield and pano. No concerns expressed by my tint shop, and they do a lot of high end cars. The interior is noticeably cooler now during the summer (Air 80 has 43% heat rejection).

Thanks guys. I'm certain the guy was just covering his side as I imagine other people had issues and pointed towards the film (dealer) since not factory.

I know there have been a couple panos shattering but don't think they had any film as they wouldn't implode.

My tint guy uses global products and I've had this as well as crystalline on my cars. I'm going with Global QDP ceramic 50% for my pano.

Most installers say they don't recommend because some sunroofs weren't produced with a real glass panel or tempered glass panel. Non glass panels are more prone to cracking.

I don't see any issue with the Q5 pano roof - as also mentioned by other posters.

I had the same setup on my last SQ. I think we go to the same shop in NYC. However I found the Air 80 to have a little blue hue to the tint. This time around I'm going to go with pinnacle 50 or 40 on the pano. It gets way too hot up there!

    Art of Tint?

The Air 80 definitely has a blue hue to it, but I wanted to stay as clear as I could while still getting good solar energy rejection. Pinnacle 50 is 49% so not a huge difference for me.

I tinted mine 30% at a local shop since i got my q5 in 2013 so far no problems.

And new knew it can lead to cracks..... alway had my sunroofs/panos tinted.

Is that just vinyl you had applied? Any reason you didn't go with a color match or black?

Yes it is vinyl.. It matches the mirrors almost perfectly. I put it on myself using the knife less tape to not scratch or etch the glass.

My reason for this was on a hot day I had my temp gun out and found 155 on the roof and 115 on the mirrors. Tint will block some sun, but the pano will still be 155 and then it's super hot if the car is locked up outside. I thought about doing he entire roof the same color.
Also since it's just vinyl I figured I can remove it easily if I didn't like it.

Are you adding tint to the back door windows even though the windows are already tinted?

Are you tinting the top 6 inches of the wind shield or the whole wind shield?

    Regards,

    Peter

I did every window completely including the windshield and back and rear glass. The factory tint in the back doesn't offer the same level of solar energy rejection as ceramic film. For the windshield, the NY law is 70% light transmittance, so I had Air 80 put on the whole windshield. The actual light transmittance is probably below 70 but close enough that I'm unlikely to be hassled for it.

I talked with my shop yesterday and will be taking it in this coming Fri/Sat to get it done (if they're working... I forgot to ask about 4th of July weekend!)

Anyway, I'm in the same boat. I want to ceramic tint the rears, back glass, and pano just a slight amount darker, but mainly to keep UV/heat down.

The fronts I want to match the rears.

The windshield I will do in the Llumar Air 80.

My shop only carrier Llumar as their high end brand.
    http://cdn.llumar.com/drupal/llautos...20140715_0.pdf

Going with the CTX all around, and Air on the windshield.

I have been trying to figure which ones to do, but I'll just need to let the shop meter it and put the right one on to make it match.
State law is 35% front windows only.

I like the tint about the VLT of the rears, or maybe a tad darker.

Keep in mind the rears meter at like 27% from the factory, so if you tint them, even just a 50 film will mean you'll need like 15% up front to match.

I really like Air 80 on the windshield and pano.

I may just clear ceramic the rears and back window. I like the look of it as is, I just want some heat rejection and UV protection for my 10 month old.

The pano roof I could go a bit darker on.

Any issues with the Air 80 as far as color/clarity? I think I read it had a bit of blue tint to it. That may have been you that posted that.
As long as it's pretty even clarity wise I'm good.

I wonder how it will work with the state inspection window sticker also.

It's got a bit of a bluish hue to it. It's not noticeable to me when driving except when I have polarized sunglasses on. The rainbow effect that happens with window tint and polarized lenses is obviously more noticeable on the windshield though.

Here's pics from the inside and outside of my car.

    Awesome! Thanks for the pics.

I wear polarized sunglasses all the time. I'll have to decide what I'll tolerate I guess on that.

    Color looks pretty good though.

What did they do for your state inspection stickers? Cut out that area, or on top of the film?
I know they scrape them off with a blade every year when they take the old ones off here.

It's required here to be adhered to the windshield at drivers front lower corner.

Man that stinks you have a front plate law. Europlate looks so nice up there.
You're ride looks nice man. I've got a couple of surprises up my sleeve once I get it done.

For the registration and inspection stickers, my tint shop put it on some cling vinyl and then cut that out and stuck it onto the windshield over the film. They were actually able to take my existing stickers off the windshield and reuse them. They also gave me an extra sheet of the cling vinyl, so I had the dealership use that for my new inspection sticker this year. You definitely don't want them putting stickers directly on the film, and I think a cut out looks pretty bad.

I think I am going with 3M Crystalline.

    CR70 on Pano
    CR60 rear hatch
    CR70 rear side windows
CR50 or CR60 on front sides
CR70 or CR90 for window shield

    Thanks for the help

Just to circle back to OP - did you end up pulling the trigger? The story from my tint guy was some story about heat not being able to escape the way it was able to. created a buckling, and a long crack. The google machine tells me both ways, and has a lot of anecdotes without any official statements that i can find from a tint manufacturer.

color matched vinyl might be the way to go! at 6'1" with a long torso, i'd appreciate the ability to roll back that fabric above my head full time. plus, my super sweet hair would still look... you know... trumpish.

color matched vinyl might be the way to go! at 6'1" with a long torso, i'd appreciate the ability to roll back that fabric above my head full time. plus, my super sweet hair would still look... you know... trumpish.
I'm booked for the 7th to detail and have it installed, but haven't decided yet on whether I will or won't. Currently I have my roof box so it blocks most of the sun.

Only thing I can think of that the two materials (glass and film) will expand and contract at different rates. Being in an environment that will go from -40F to 95F, I have to be concerned with it but this would be no different than the rear hatch glass except for the fact it probably doesn't get as hot. I have no evidence or proof of this. I picture if the glass is expanding (obviously its not a lot since it's bound on four sides) faster than the film causing some stress, or visa versa when is colder than *uck outside and the heat is high inside the car.

Basically, I still don't know what to do. I have subjected myself to the normal heat I would since I'm using the box to help.

yeah, my butthole puckers thinking of the cost of replacing that whole roof if something were to go wrong. I'm in Utah, so similar 40° swings in a single day all the time. I'll let you guinea it, and then see :D

    I'm debating now too.

Just got done reading all the message board scientists on a VW board talk about reflective angles and slide rules, and different tint materials and types of glass. And the glass getting twice the heat because it's getting sun and reflection back through it at the same time.

I'm thoroughly confused. And afraid. And sad. All at the same time.

I tinted my slab-o-glass with the darkest ceramic tint I could get. No problems after a year of seasons, and I can watch the next solar eclipse through my roof.

    Which brand did you use?

I called a couple of places (one of which does all the tinting for the Audi dealer) and they have never had a problem. I'm going to do it and take a chance. Fingers crossed its not a costly one.

I did find this though, but not related to tint. So possibly where the concern came from for my tint guy.

Had our SQ5 tinted yesterday, 15% ceramic on both of the upper panels. My tint guy already had the cut out in his film program, took him less than an hour to get the job done. $80 and I was out the door.

Took the SQ in for tint today (among a couple of other things... Exhaust tips and Calipers) and talked with the installer who has been doing this for 20+ years.
He said there is a very real risk of fracture due to the sun coming through glass (heating it once), hitting the film, and being refracted back through the glass again (heating it again). Since the glass was fixed in place it made it more prone to fracture.

I ask him point blank if he would do it if it were his car, and he said no. So for now at least, I'm holding off on that.

Did Llumar CTX on the front windows to match the rear factory tint, and either light tinting the rears with CTX or one of the clear ceramic Airs for the rear to get UV and heat rejection for the rear passengers/baby.

Should be ready tomorrow for pick up.

He said they'd make it right.
