How much should I be willing to spend to install coilovers on my Audi A4?

After doing a bit of searching on the forum, I found that you guys were being quoted at $300-400.

My local mechanic (very reputable) quoted me $600-800 at $100/hr. He said Audi's were much more difficult than something like a Honda (he did my brother's for $200) and that it would be an all-day affair.

This sounds super expensive especially in comparison, where you guys were saying $500 is too much. What I'm asking is: is that way too many hours for getting that job done or is the hourly rate too high? Most quotes I've gotten around the $700+ range but there's another local shop which just quoted me $350 - not sure if they're used to doing this with Audi's though.

600-800 seems like way to much to me. My understanding is time wise, about an hour a corner. So I think 400 or so is about right.

300 is about right tbh. But then again, i did it myself. With a jack. And basic tools.

I got quoted a little over $800 too. That's what pushed me over the edge to DIY. Glad I did, it forces you to become familiar with the workings of the suspension which totally helps with troubleshooting or researching mods. Done it twice now, about to be a third.

I was quoted 850 with alignment and that was more than I paid for the coilovers. Ended up doing it myself and due to a couple screw ups took the better part of two days but if I were to do it all over again I would still do it myself

I've done the B8/B8.5 chassis a few times and it's not difficult. A reputable shop *should* be able to complete it in about 5hrs for roughly $400-$500. Anything more, it's too expensive. It's not difficult to do, just very time consuming and requires an extra set of hands to make things easier. The front assembly is heavy and the rear sub frame has to be dropped in order to access and remove the rear springs. If you do have a shop perform the work, ask them, what torque specs they use on all the bolts. If they don't do it right, don't pay!

I did my back without dropping the subframe. As long as you have the spring compressor that goes on the outside of the spring rather than the inside, you can get the springs out without dropping it.

If you're even remotely mechanical and have access to the internet (and the fact that your posting on a forum means you do), for less than half the install quote you can buy all the tools required for the install and some beer for some like minded car guys and get it done. Just my .02¢
    Thanks,\
    Ed

300-450 is a reasonable range. All the specialist shops around me charge 85-95/hr, so 100/hr seems high....

It depends on where you live. 400 roughly is fair not including alignment.

I suggust not getting an alignment. And going to a tires plus or firestone after they offer lifetime alignment for 200 so anytime you want to adjust or get tires or if your just bored you can go in for alignment.

With the folks who did it. None of you guys had trouble removing the pinch bolt. That bolt is the reason i do not work on suspensions.
Putting the control arm back to torque it properly was equally as annoying.

I paid $400, if you have a couple hours and a friend or two it really isn't too bad to DIY. I just didn't have time when I bought my springs and Im not a patient individual!
