Failing shocks

I've had 3 PPI's done on R8's, all had less than 20K miles on them, and all 3 needed at least 2 of the 4 shocks replaced, with one needing all 4 (@12K miles).

Have any of you owners experienced such things? I can't believe the shock failure is so common, and at such low miles. Any insight would be appreciated!

Common issue talked on Audi Forums. Many options to replace them with OEM Euro set up & GT Non mag ride which have a lower cost. Mag shocks for all 4 will cost you 5200. Then you need to install them or find someone to do it. If you are buying a pre-owned R8 use these issues in your negotiation to reduce the price.

I actually walked away, I'd just rather not throw extra money at car I haven't even bought yet. Parts seem to be more around 6500 + install. Any information on the Euro or GT setups?

At that price would switching to KW V3 or Ohlins coilovers be more beneficial or is the mag ride that good?

I just wanted a stock car, I would not be opposed to throwing in coils eventually, but even then I'd drop some serious coin on a good setup just after the initial purchase....

Totally understandable. Im just figuring if you were to lets say find one with leaking mag shocks, negotiate about 5k off price then buy Ohlins TTX or KW V3 and install. yes its a pain but at least you would now have fully adj coilovers.

Oh I tried, they wanted to take 2K off, that's barely covering 1 shock. For sure, sound points, thanks guys!

The other thing to look for is ac issues, very high fail rate in the R8's and it's a 5k+ fix. Mine went a couple months ago but luckily just before warranty expired. My car is a 2012 with 23k miles and have only had one shock replaced, wasnt the leaking issue was an electrical problem with it. What model and year you looking for? Mine might be going up for sale soon.

Hi Scott, met you a few times at various events, always a showstopper! Anyways I am finalizing a 09 4.2 as I type. Yours may be a bit out of my range to be fair. What is the most active R8 forum, this is kind of slow. Thanks!
