Just took out my intake and decided to snoop around the engine a bit and noticed this... Does anyone have any idea wtf would cause that?

There should be a hex head bolt there. Looks like someone cut or snapped it off? Are you the original owner?

I am the second owner. What does that hold together? Any chance you have the same engine and could snap a quick pic? If not do you know what its called so I can google a pic?

I don't know what engine you have but mine's the usual 2.0 TFSI. I don't know what it's for and only the head of the bolt is visible...nothing is attached to it. Perhaps someone like Allowancer, who has taken this apart can explain what it's for.

My guess is he's got the 2.0T also since the pipe in that first pic says turbo.

Confirmed there's supposed to be a hex bolt there, I forgot to put it back in when I installed my HFC (had no reason to remove it really) and smoke was billowing out of it.

Does anyone have a picture they can take of what its supposed to look like? my engine is 2.0T. This area is so mangled I cant tell what belongs there. What would that bolt hold together?

Here is a pic from another DIY that shows what that area should look like. I think that is a bolt that holds on the heat shield. I can get a pic of mine when I get home from work.

There's really nothing to see other than the bolt head. It's just like the undamaged area next to what you have, with a bolt head.

Edit: It's exactly like the bolt head in the above pic.

Just snapped this. Like others have said, it's literally just a bolt head.

That's your exhaust heat shield. I don't think the bolt should be a hex head; the part number resolves to a triple square round head bolt. If you want a pic of one, I can take one. Part number is: N10 572 403

On 3 cars I've removed the heat sheild on there have been 2 triple squares, and 1 6mm allenhead.

There are 2 retaining bolts on the upper part of the shield and this single bolt on the lower section. It too may just be another retaining bolt. They may have changed the bolt type, since mine definitely take a hex driver. In his pic, you can see one of the upper bolts and it's a triple square. It's also hard to tell from the pic if the remains of a bolt are there or just damage to the shield.

Ah, good call guys. Wasn't aware of the hex bolt. I see what you both are saying now though.

Appreciated. As long as its not an important part I will just leave it as is.

Im trying to figure that out too, I cant tell if the bolt itself sunk into the shield or if the bolt head broke off and the stud is in there still.

I swear when I forgot to put mine back in and started the car there was tons of smoke coming out of that hole, I think it may be more than just a dumb heat shield bolt. IF that's true and that bolt was left/shimmied out then could all that black crap be crusty exhaust or burned oil you'd typically find in a catch can...and warping the surrounding metal?

No. That bolt could be plugging a hole that would otherwise be utilized on a different engine that uses this same bare head, but oil and exhaust crust would not build up like that.

That hole is just a bolt hole for sure. I didn't even put the heat shield back on my car post my rebuild; nor did any of the bolts go back in.
