Cover plate between the engine block and transmission bell housing

I realized that when I took the transmission out of the 2002 Audi Quattro with a 1.8 5 spd manual, that I'm having to replace the rear main seal for the second time, doesn't have a cover plate installed between the engine block and bell housing. I know that the 2004 Audi Quattro 1.8 6 spd manual that I have has a cover plate is there supposed to be one in the 2002 and if one is supposed to be there what are the ramifications of not having one?

I believe there is no spacer for the 1.8t. When I did my tip to 6 speed, my donor transmission was from a 2006 S4. The spacer was thicker compared to 3.0 spacer. I was told use the spacer that came with your motor.
