I figured out how to get free Audi Connect

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I originally posted this in the c7 forum b/c I have an S7. I think A4s have this too and I am sure it will help someone. If I cannot x-post, just delete this thread.

Go here: link Buy that for 4.99. There is a freedompop trial of 1 gb a month that you can downgrade anytime. It's kinda tricky how to downgrade, but it is in account settings and gives you 200 mb a month after downgrade FOR FREE AND FOREVER!

I bought 2 of these so I have 400 a month data. When you get it, the default settings will not work. You need to read the package it comes in to change the APN in Audi. It's something like freedompopmobile.foggmobile.com (or something like that). Also enable data roaming. Then it will work and you will have Audi Connect for FREE.

BTW, if you are interested in getting more free data, PM me and I can invite you I believe so that you get more free data when you sign up. I just leave the extra sim in my center console and swap them out if it runs out. From what I've read it is like 80 mb to cache a map on google earth. I don't use the google earth function and just use the Audi Connect and it doesn't eat much data.

This looks interesting. I'd like to try it out too. What all can we do with Audi Connect though?

Audi Connect is over Tmobile 3G and painfully slow. I saw zero reason to keep it once my free trial ended. At this point you can just talk to your phone and get the info 300x faster.

Haha it is esp on 2g which I'm on. I will have dealer upgrade at no charge to 3g for my car. I just like all functions to work in the car and this is a free way of doing so.

Just to update, I've been using this for a month and it actually works! Just remember you're limited to 200mb a month. Thanks @flyfishing

What offers do you have to complete to get this? Doesn't seem worth it if it's going to take up a lot of my time, or put me at risk for identity theft.

Or is it the 200mb are always free, and if you want more, THEN that's when you have to complete offers?

it's free, no offers to complete. The first month you pay for along with the sim card (currently i think it's on sale for $2). After activation you can cancel the service which is $13/month and it will automatically give you 200mb free a month. keep in mind that if you go over the 200mb you have to pay $0.03 per meg. I've had mine in for about a month and used 89 mb but didn't really use it for anything except google earth. I ordered a couple more cards and I plan to do what @flyfishing did and swap them out. I plan to number each card so it's easy to cycle through them.

    Thumbs up

Oh nice! I'm definitely going to be trying this! I also wanted to point out that on the homepage: http://www.freedompop.com/wireless-internet, they state that their general pricing has "100% Free Basic Plan - 500 texts, 200 minutes, and 500MB each month" However, I don't know all of the details, so there could be other charges that they're not telling us with the 500MB.

I may take the time to read the fine print later this evening and let y'all know.

EDIT: So I looked up the fine print and read some of it and I saw that they retain the rights to allow the government to look into your data usages and etc. However, if all I'm doing is using this for google searches and download map data for my car, then I'll have no issue with the government tracking how many times a week my fat ass eats pizza.

Also when I checked out, I was offered an option to order another sim for an extra $1. So I did. I'll update again once I get everything in and activated.

Got mine in today! It was super easy to set up. Mine came preactivated. So step-by-step, how exactly do I downgrade to the free service?

This sounds interested. Any issues reported?

Curious - there are two options for SIM Cards - one for Talk, Text, Data and one for Data only. Both carry 200MB per month. Will either work or is there a recommendation from the group?

It works very well. My only complaint is that there isn't as much high speed coverage as T-Mobile is. It is getting better though.

Others sort of stopped responding to this thread but I've successfully done it and it's definitely worth it

I think you're talking about the APN settings. If you google FreedomPop APN, you should be able to find them, but to be honest, I don't think there is a username and password.
    Try leaving them blank?

I tried leaving them blank but I can't click okay on the setting because it requires that SOMETHING be entered. Any other ideas?

I just ordered 2 cards for $.01 each! That's a whopping 2 cents to give this a try!! Hopefully they are legit and it works :)

IF your ordering, try this link, you may get the same .01 deal
    http://fpop.co/i6wr

I just got an A8 L over the weekend and have Verizon for cell coverage. I was about to bite the bullet and spend $20 for a week of data from T-Mobile to give the sim a try.... Super glad I found this today!

Also, when I ordered, I got an email with my username and password from freedompop. I'm guessing that is what's needed along with the APN info.

My understanding is that C7.0s are stuck with Verizon, while 7.5s moved to ATT. Verizon downgraded its 3G network to 2G as part of its overall conversion to 4G. The end result is that the 7.0 is stuck with 2G Verizon. Original owners can get an ATT module from Audi. Otherwise, it's like having a phone "locked" to a network. For those of you that have this new SIM card working in their cars, is anyone able to do so with the original Verizon hardware?

I just got a 2013 CPO, and I'm stuck with 2G. Audi Connect reactivated the SIM card, and gave me my first month of service free. Thereafter, it's $10/mo for unlimited data. It's painfully slow. My month is almost up, and I haven't found anything about it to be worth even $10/mo. Google maps is cool, but traditional nav maps are easier to read. A mobile hotspot seems like a great idea, but heck, we all have faster phones. I don't see myself firing up my laptop too often while driving. Is wifi necessary for voice control? If so, that could be the only utility of this feature.

The traffic feature is enabled, but I'm not certain whether it's a function of Audi Connect. I had that feature on a Bimmer iDrive years ago, which did not have a wifi connection.

I've got FreedomPop in both my B8 A4 and my wifes new A3. Works great in both cars!

Apparently, the traffic info is provided by SIRIUS XM, not via the internet. So having data won't help :(

I am answering my own question. This a modification of another user's solution:

Once your SIM is activated (if purchased direct from FreedomPop it is already activated)
    In my 2016 A6
    took out the old SIM
    turned on the ignition
waiting for MMI to fully boot
    put in new FreedomPop SIM
    Went to Telephone - Settings
    Click on Connections
    Click on Data Connection
    Click on Connection Settings.
APN was set to the factory ATT settings.
I changed the APN to "fp.com.attz" (don't enter the quotes)

It might take a few pwr on/off cycles to make connection

If you go over the 200MB, does it tell you? Would you be able to cap it at 200MB so you don't go over? I sound so frugal right now... =/

I would only use this for traffic reasons. Does it give you that or that is through XM? I'm also guessing you have to have 3G+ MMI right? or will 3G work?

That's an encrypted signal from Sirius, so that won't be enabled by having the sim. I'm not sure if you need both though to have traffic working however.
I don't think you'd have to have the 3g plus option because FreedomPop also supports 2g. 3g works fine for me too but I also have the 3g+
