    Question 2013 3.0T Q7 increased oil consumption

    Hi Everyone:

I found very early in the life of our 2013 3.0T prestige that it burned about 1 quart every 4500-500 miles. So I decided that rather than adding a quart I would just change the oil every 5K miles, instead of the recommended 10K mile interval. Since the oil change at 50K, the oil consumption has gone up by 2 fold; the oil went below the low level at 52K(I added a quart) and then again at 54K. My dealer is extremely helpful. They had the car for 4 days (For the 55k mile service) and inspected it thoroughly. Unfortunately, they found nothing. The next step is for me to monitor it and return the car as soon as the oil level goes down again.

Has anyone on the forum experienced this issue? I know that the earlier models had a breather valve issue but this is not the case with mine (And dealer inspected it).

    Thanks

    Namvar

Thanks. They checked it out and it was not the valve. Now on oil consumption watch....

Yeah my first thought would be the PCV valve too. I have had lots of trouble with BMWs and PCV valves causing them to blow white smoke out the back.

Is your car throwing any error codes and do you notice any weird symptoms while driving it? Or does it feel normal all the time and it just eats a lot of oil?
Just remember, it could always be a hell of a lot worse...

update: After the 55K service the car has gone back to normal. Dealer found nothing wrong with the car during the service (And no codes either). I had my oil changed at 50K and that is when the problem started. There are no oil stains in the garage so it wasn't a loose drain plug or a loose filter. So I have no clue what happened between that oil change and the 55K mile service that caused this temporary above normal oil consumption. But I have to say that my tail pipes are not as "Sooty" anymore.

Just a thought, R U certain that the oil change was done w/the correct amount of oil going back in? Maybe a missed/incorrect count on refill amount? Did U do the oil change or a shop? I've had this happen to me once, that's Y I am asking? The shop apologized but there was now other explanation. Same as U, no oil leak, loose filter, etc. I always check & had driven < than 12 miles but it was down a full quart. Called them & all was made right. If not I have no idea. Just keep track & keep us posted. We have the same auto's just reversed model years so I am more an just a little interested ~ the oil consumption issue.

    Update:

at 5000 miles and the oil level is at minimum. So basically back to behaving normal. Changing the oil tomorrow.

As a side note, a friend of mine had his oil change by an independent shop and his oil level started to drop very ast. Turned out the the drain plug o-ring was crushed and cracked.

If it turns out the the drain plug has/had a crushed ring, wouldn't it have been leaking? No oil stains, right? Still have no idea. Checking the CFO's level today, she has just over 9K miles & I follow the same routine of changing Q5K miles as well. I'll let U know & I'll look for your follow up after your oil change.

Oil changed and I added a bit more myself to bring the level slightly above the max line. I'll check every 1000 miles or so and post the results

Does the oil you use really make a difference? Meaning, if I use expensive oil, it won't burn as much and I won't have to add between oil changes? I'm driving the Prestige - 3.0 supercharged V6 with about 68k miles.

Different oils burn at different rates. However, any oil will burn if there is an issue with your engine.

Try Mobil 1 Fully synthethic for a run or two and see what happens. That oil hase never burned on me on my past cars.

If you aren't burningwith Mobil 1, switch over to Motul

Sometimes it does, especially based on your driving behavior. If you're an aggressive driver driving at higher RPM's your engine will consume oil, however, better grade oil can withstand consumption at higher RPM's, there is no question about that. I've used the following oils (all full synthetic) and can classify from good to bad in the following order,

Also, the additives break down faster in the lower grade oils. My consumption is minimal, I've only had to top off oil every 3,000 miles or so on my 2004 Avant, using Motul 5W-40. Just switched over to Liqui-Moly 0W-40 for the Winter; holding up just fine

Old car owners like to say not to change oil, but everyone's views are different

    1). Motul 5W-40 X-Cess
    2). Liqui-Moly 0W-40 Synthoil
    3). Castrol OE-Spec 5W-40
    4). Castrol 0W-40
5). Mobil 0W-40 (recently underwent mixed criticism even in the Bimmer-forum).
6). Castrol 5W-40 (not synthetic), Conventional Oil
