Question 2017 Ford Fusion Sport NEMESIS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Although this is not a direct competitor, what do you guys think of this turbo 2.7 V6 with AWD 325hp and 380 ft lbs of torque?

This might cannabilize Ford Focus RS sales as well!!!

Nobody cross shopping an Audi/MB/BMW is going to be considering a Ford Fusion. That said, from the performance figures and weight I wouldn't be surprised if this hit 60mph in 5 flat. Not sure how the top end will be though, but it's certainly going to eat into some sales for people cross shopping an Accord V6 or Kia Optima.

If you're buying the car for the "prestige" associated with the logo, you're not going to be looking at Ford. Or for the interior design...which they're still terrible at.

However, I would absolutely cross shop the Focus RS vs the S3 (or RS3 for that matter), and had the Focus RS been available when I was looking...I might have gone with it because:

    A) It looks mean. Like don't F with me mean.
    B) 6 speed manual anyone?
    C) I can't even believe I'm saying it but, better AWD system.
    D) It eats the S3 for breakfast and then it's likely to wash it down with an RS3 for lunch.

If you haven't actually driven the car you should go test drive one just for S & Gs. If you're lucky the dealership might have a 350R there to drool over as well (complete with it's $50k over MSRP markup). If you're super lucky they might even fire that beast up and let you listen to it scream. Anyone hating on Ford simply for being "a Ford" just isn't paying attention these days.

...I feel somewhat dirty after having written all of that. Time to go take a shower and then sit in the S3 for a few mins to remember who I am.

Lets keep going with this Ford discussion... The 350 with the track package is a much better value than the 350R, and for the next model year the track package comes standard!

If the RS had been out, I would have definitely gotten it over the S3. I didn't get the S3 for its prestige or interior...
The RS's AWD is far better than the Haldex, the car has way more cargo space and would generally be a more 'fun' car.
But, I'm glad I ended up with the S3. For daily driving to school and back in LA traffic, the DSG wins over a 6 speed, and I've heard a few complaints about the RS's on the road ride quality (super stiff).

All great cars, just depends on what you're looking for

Yea definitely didn't get the S3 because of racecar... I got it because its a great daily, great interior, and lil bit of badge snobbery- but mostly because its a great daily. DSG is the closest thing to manual and I needed a rest to a daily manual in S.Cali traffic

So this new upcoming Ford Fusion Sport will have 325hp and 380 lb-ft? I would rather have 380hp and 325 lb-ft! When torque is that much higher than hp it means it would only have low end punch but not good at top end. This is clearly not a performance oriented power delivery. It is designed more for effortless take offs in the city type driving citations. I bet it would such on the track. This new trend of downsizing engines and paring them with some form forced induction certainly has some benefits (fuel economy, weight reduction, broad torque curve etc) but they need to be tuned properly.

Sure is. More competition means more and better options.

I'm a Ford enthusiast as much as I am a VW enthusiast as you can tell from my signature, but I don't really care for the new Fusions. They're great cars but something about them doesn't resonate with me. The S3 is one of the most fun daily drivers I've ever had, it's the perfect size and has great useable power. There's not much out there that I would consider replacing it with other than an RS3 when it shows up.

I was going to buy the RS, wasn't really even considering an audi. that is until the RS never made a spring release date and I could no longer wait and had to buy a car. Then when you look at the fact i bought an audi S3 for about the same price I would have spent on the RS, and the S3 is a nicer car than the RS I look at it as a win. Is the S3 gonna win on the autocross track compared to an RS, no...but it would be a damn close drag race.

if anyone buys a car for the "prestige" associated with the logo, or as a status symbol because of the name brand, they are complete morons.

also, id chose a car with a longitudinal engine over a crappy transverse setup.

Yes, let's get real. It won't beat it in a straight line, but I don't care about straight line speed as it's simply not impressive to me. Going fast in a straight line is only so much fun. Putting a car through it's paces at a track is endless fun and that's where you really separate the strong from the weak. Around a track, the Focus RS is going to take the RS3's lunch money...hands down. We'll see if that changes when Audi releases the new RS3 in a year.

Ford has come along way. I swore them off about 25 years ago when I had two in a row that Ford could not get to stop leaking oil. I bought them brand new. And, I don't mean they were seeping oil - they were leaving puddles on the driveway and in the garage. After multiple attempts to repair them, Ford bought one back on its own, no Lemon Law. I sold the other.

Fast forward 25 years and I bought a '14 Fusion Energi brand new. From the day I got it, Ford dropped the ball on everything. I had multiple issues with the navi, electronics in general, and finally, it rode like a mid-60's Cadi with 300K miles on it. I never expected it to handle lie a tight German car, but not constantly swaying and floating on the freeway or any road, would have been better. I will say the body design was very nice and the fit and finish was pretty good overall. Their top of the line audio system was junk.

Amazingly, I had asked the dealership I bought it from to not install the front plate bracket and to just put it in the trunk for me to deal with. They said they would and they did not do that. I called and spoke with 4 different people at the dealership, including the sales manager and asked them to just mail the bracket. They all promised to and it never did arrive. I ended up mounting the plate with my own bracket in a much better, lower, position.

Sold it and bought the S3. Happy camper now as the S3 is my DD and is enjoyable to commute in.

I haven't tested the Sport, but I did test a 2017 Platinum model AWD. It's extremely solid, relatively nimble and pretty quick for its segment. It's a really good overall car and if you can get it for around $35k, it has a lot of value.

No, the new Ford Fusions have redone their turning radiuses dramatically. They aren't like they used to be back in the first generation. Trust me, I had one for a long time.

ya, i just dont get excited when i see a ford fusion. it seems most american cars, even corvettes, look like a pile of $%*# after 5 + years. to me, it seems as if american cars throw out these high hp cars and the rest of the car is crap.

when i was shopping for a car, i thought about the new mustang gt, but then i was worried about who id have to park next to at car meets. haha.

I can't agree with you on American cars in general, but yeah, as much as I liked the Ford Fusion Platinum, it just didn't stand out enough for me. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that these are meant to be your standard, mass appeal cars that you see everywhere. The more you see them, the less value they're perceived to have. I don't think it's specifically an American thing, but the same holds true for any sedan in that market, like your Honda Accords or Toyota Camrys and Nissan Altimas...etc.

Everytime someone gets excited about a domestic product, it usually turns out being a disappointment. Cheap materials is the biggest issue. You always seem to get quantity but at the expense of quality.
You get the space, and/or big engine...but then it's followed up by an interior meant for children to play in. You might get the interior but then it feels like driving your couch down the road.

There has really only been one car that changed that for me and that was the C7 Vette. I haven't been in the brand new Mustang, but the previous generations were good, but still 'an entry level'...which it is...just lacking that 'I want to drive this all day every day'. Though maybe spoiled with driving premium cars for too long.

The Ford Fusion is probably more up in the A4 / A6 area for the size of car, and therefore severely out classed. Bigger is never better in the automotive world, unless you are building a dragster.

i see your point. I just cant think of 1 American car that still looks cool after a few years. I mean, any BMW, VW, Audi, Benz, and some special edition japanese cars still look great and have curb appeal (as long as its taken care of and not thrashed) years and even decades later. look at a camaro, mustang, cadilac etc from the 90s or 2000's, they look like the biggest pos's on the road. look at a clean gti, 3 series or c class from the 80's & 90s, they still look great and make you excited to drive them.

0-60 in about 5.6 seconds, which is pretty underwhelming, even though it weighs a lot. First impressions seem to be that it's not at all the affordable Audi alternative that people thought it would be because it's still based on the regular CD platform which wasn't made for driving dynamics. It seems to be a "go faster" option for people cross shopping an Accord V6 or Camry V6 etc.

I have a 2015 edge sport with the same 2.7 twin turbo and it is a very slick family hauler. It has a ton of power and is decent on fuel for an SUV. I have surprised a few people off the line with my suv that does 0-60 in 5.6s. On top of that, it came in 20k cheaper to a similar spec toureg deisel.

Yes the Ford Edge sport looks nice! Imagine if they put the 3.5 Ecoboost in there!

Car & Driver did an article on the new F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost & 10 spd auto, they say 0 to 60 in 5.3 to 5.5 seconds in a full size truck!

The Fusion sport should be priced at $29,995 and be properly tuned.......

My last 3 cars bought prior to my Audi have been fords.

    2015 Mustang GT
    2014 Explorer Sport
    2013 SHO

The SHO interior was very close in fit and finish to my 2000 A6 (which is a classic). The fit and finish of the SHO carried on the ex-sprt and new mustang GT.

Don't hate on ford. They are 10x the better car they were then 6 short years ago.

I rather Ford release that redesigned Taurus that they are holding in China.

See how the bigger Taurus look more aggressive than the Fusion.

Reason why the S3 is so impressive is the Engine and Drivetrain take a ton more power without needing to rebuild the engine or tranny and gets impressive gains with little invested. I highly doubt the Fusion will be the same. Who ever cares about stock performance. I shop for ONLY potential to go faster.
