Timing Chain Cost?? - Plz Advise! - Oil Part 2

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey all,

My car is currently in for part 2 of oil consumption test. They said the timing chain is 50% worn, and it will cost me 350 to replace.

Has anyone else had this done, if so how much did it cost? Did any dealers do it for free? I saw a few people said they now do it as part of part 2, but obviously my dealer wants to charge me.

Anything else need done? Water pump?

Dealers usually only charge laybor if you bring genuine parts. I did my consumption and timing at the same time bc the engine was already coming out. No such thing as half worn as a faulty tentsioner is a faulty tensioner. Do it all now well worth the 350.

The tensioner has been revised and they say the top chain stretches (not convinced) but it all needs replaced, cover, chains guides yadayada

There should be no labor charge as the timing chain and timing all has to be redone when the motor comes apart anyways.
It all depends on what is being replaced. Is it just the tensioner? Tensioner and chain? Tensioner, chain and guides?

Not necessarily true. There is a labor charge, mine along with 2 other cars that had full piston replacement. Now if you spend a lot of money at that dealership they could throw you a bone but no garantees

Yes there shouldnt be a labor charge but unfortunately for the 3 i witnessed at 2 dealerships there was a charge regardless of bringing genuine parts in.

For the record my labor charge was 110.00 before tax. The other 2 cars were around the same. (Sorry guys for not consolidating these messages)

Key wording from my response, "there should be no labor charge"; meaning, they shouldn't charge you at all. It is part of the reassembly of the motor. I would argue that till I was blue in the face.

350$ for the chain installed is a steal.
Try to do this at an independent shop and see how much they charge you.
Plus if you do it at the dealer, its covered under warranty!

You'll be paying for the timing chain cover too as it's pretty much impossible to reuse the old one after pulling it off.

Has anyone seen where Audi replaced the parts for free? I know I saw a few posts.. but my car isn't under warranty anymore.

I do not know what $350 all includes, I will ask them.

I payed around 350 just for the kit, i payed additionally 110 for the labor, it really comes down to if they choose to help out with the cost, i was over mileage so i was just lucky to be approved for pistons. I was NOT under warranty when all consumption and timing kit done (same time). 93k was all fixed.

Went ahead and pulled the trigger. was $350 for the chain and tensioner only. Said everything else looked good. I prob won't even hit 100K, but who knows if it could go earlier.

Good call. Plenty of people on here have had theirs go earlier.

No labor charge? If so - great; that's what they should be doing

Not sure, he just said it was $310 for both parts in TOTAL, so not sure how much the parts were.
