Block options to replace blown block.

    Hey fellas,

Brother's B6 block has several cracks in it, leaking water everywhere. It is a 2004 A4 Quattro/Auto. I have received conflicting information in regards to which blocks I can and cannot use. The car is an automatic. I have a spare Q/M block I could use if it could be retrofitted to work in his auto trans car. If not, I suppose ill need an auto crank block.

    ISO: Auto Trans block! lol

    Thanks in advance, Zine.

Block is the same on auto/manual. Cranks different. You need an auto crank or need to machine the crank snout down on a Manual to fit the automatic transmission. AWM blocks will work but you need to open up the tstat opening. I just did a b6 motor swap with an AWM motor.

    AMB

AWN opened to accept the AMB thermostat

Doug did this and it leaked. He had it machined on a Bridgeport to solve it. Mine was with a dremel. Didn't leak.

VW 06A blocks will work as well. However all the cranks are the manual type.

My man! Thanks Andrew. Forgot to add you to my "keywords". I haven't been on in a long time and forgot your handle. So, I can use a combination of the blocks that I have in the shop then. +rep

Keep in mind, you can use ANY transverse 06a block as well. Of course Passat AUG's too. That's what I have in my 01 A4

Thanks for the clarification. When I said VW 06A I mentally was thinking of the transverse. So to word my previous statement properly all 06a transverse cranks are manual type. VW longitudinal 06a motors will have manual or auto cranks.

Bingo! You can convert an auto crank to run a manual transmission pretty easily, but I believe it is impossible to run a manual crank on an auto without machine work.

You are correct. There is a pilot needle bearing that fits the ID of the hole in the crank, and also has the right ID for the trans input shaft, but the bearing needs to only be pressed into the hole in the crank about 1/2 of the depth of the hole. The bushing in the auto crank needs to be pulled out before the needle roller pilot bearing is pressed into the bore hole in the crank nose.

I know, I've done it before

Not sure how many miles the guy has on it, but it is still operating successfully 2.5 years later

I bought a motor for my daily and forgot about the crank issues. It was a manual crank and my daily is a TIP. So I found another short block. The manual motor (awm shown above with the block modified) went into the b6 I flipped later down the road. It all worked out.

Was such a nice clean 6spd car. Garage kept and sat with a oil pressure loss motor from 2011-15. Then I put her back on the road.

Looks good. I have 2 B6s in the garage with similar issues. Both were clean, low-mileage, tuned cars that threw rods. Ater I get Tyler's car back on the road, i'll get wrenching on the other 2 to get them out of the garage. The wife says I have a hoarding problem with cars, lol.

    I'm getting there too!

2 B5 A4's, one modded one stock for DD (I commute 150 miles daily) and I just acquired a B5 S4. I've had various other vehicles over the last year, but all were sold for profit. All 3 of these B5's are sticking around.

Yeah I have done a crank conversion too, no problems with the converted crank. Details explained for the benefit of others.

    Necro bump.
I went through the same ordeal and thought i would add another thing to consider.... If you're not using an AMB block there's a good chance you won't have the mounting hole on the right side of the block to bolt your Turbo support to. I used a 06A 103 021C block ( that came out of another built B6 )and it had the smaller thermostat opening and no mounting hole for the Turbo support. Picked up another turbo support bracket and am going to fab the two together to make a useable one.

I realized the thermostat wouldn't fit right before dropping the new engine in, and it was too late/ didn't have the tools to open up the hole so i went the route of meticulously trimming the thermostat housing to fit inside the hole, then used permatex water pump/thermostat RTV just for peace of mind and have had no problems. I went back to inspect the thermostat that was originally mounted on the block, and it was an AMB one that didn't even sit flush in the opening. Very shocked to see someone was running it like that...

    Red Block is the 06A 103 021C E5DCE42E-E530-4897-B949-A49DA39AF02C.jpg Black dirty block is the 06A 103 021K A73C877B-500B-4FDF-9BEC-745403BC563E.jpg9E5482CE-F9B3-4757-857B-59E3D24DEE7E.jpg

I have a brand spanking new short block from vw. Brand NEW!! Only catch it its designed for a passat so you would have to swap oil pans, and open up the tstat opening. I am in Northern NJ. Short block is brand spanking new has auto crank just looked to verify. Asking a grand but open to reasonable offers. Not sure what shipping would cost.
