Question about auto crime in Virginia Beach/Lynhaven area

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I am going to be heading down to a B-day party in Virginia Beach this weekend and will be staying at a motel close to Norfolk International Airport for one night only. Is this an automobile crime problem area? I am very anal about my car and am concerned about attempted breakin's, someone keying the paint, and people breaking windows. It is a 2016 S4 6MT and is irreplaceable so if this area is a problem, I'd like to know so I can drive my truck down.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Plenty of crime rate sites out there. And if you're so worried and anal, just leave it home. Even if no one does anything, birds still poop, sticks still fall, etc. Irreplaceable is subjective.

That particular part of 757, assuming you're in that cluster of hotels by the airport or if you are closer into the VB side, I wouldn't worry one bit about it. I would be a little anxious if I were parked outside in Portsmouth, Newport News or the rougher parts of Hampton even though I have done it without issue. Living in the Hampton Roads area for close to 2 decades, theft and vandalism were never concerning factors and found them a new burden to worry about since moving up to DC Metro area.

North East-Mid Atlantic region has a Hampton Roads thread which should have a few others who could weigh in:

That would...I don't think it means what you think it means.

Virtually no car is irreplaceable. If something happens, you get it taken care of. I assume you have insurance, so don't assign so much importance to an inanimate object. Believe me: It degrades your life to give so much importance to something that isn't meant to have that much.

I live in that area and leave my car in the airport parking garage all the time with no issue. The hotels will be safe as well. That's not a high crime part of Norfolk which is a very safe city regardless. You should be fine. If you need more info feel free to PM me.

Cheers and hope you have a great time in the area!

It is irreplaceable in the sense that I can no longer buy one in the same configuration because Audi no longer makes them that way. As for assigning importance to inanimate things... while I have strong materialist instincts and therefore strong attachments to my personal and real property, I do know how to separate that from other factors in my life.

Thanks so much for this information to both of you. This is what I was looking for. I am only going to be there for one night and don't know the area since I haven't been down there for nearly 30 years. Lots of things can change in that amount of time. The motel is less than a mile from the Norfolk International Airport and is off of route 13. The party is at a private home close to N. Great Neck Road in what looks like, a very nice area.

Incorrect. You can't buy one new in your same configuration. I can assure you you could buy one used with the exact same configuration and probably the same miles; therefore, not irreplaceable.

I keep meticulous care of my property and belongings, but I don't decide what I do in life based on that. When it starts to interfere with your life then it's a problem. That said, it's your decision...so if you're fine changing things in your life because of your belongings, it's your choice.

Honestly, what I'd recommend: Buy a beater. Anytime you're doing something that you might not want to take the S4, take the beater. When I go for (sand) volleyball tournaments, and the like, I don't take the S4. That way I don't freak out about how much sand I'm tracking in or if I'm dirty.

This is the only part of your post that makes any sense to me and you're right. It IS my decision to take and mine alone. What anyone else thinks is of no concern to me other than that which I may assign concern. Others may think differently and that is certainly their prerogative. I respect that just like I respect my own desires and requirements.

As for buying a beater, I have a truck. And while not a beater, it's a 2014, it does get used in circumstances where I do not wish to put my car in jeopardy.

Oh, and BTW I was not incorrect because the context of my posting was that of a new vehicle... not one that is used.

SouthernBoy did post the original question stating that exact option as an alternative - take the S4 or his truck.

It's your decision, but if you're posting on an internet forum asking whether you should or should not do something, opinions are being requested. Because of that, any opinion around the topic should be considered valid, whether you like it or not. People are telling you it's fine to do, and I'm telling you if it's bothering you enough to be worried like this, then it'll probably bother you enough to be worried the entire time you're there.

Make whatever decision you want, but don't act like you're above others' opinions if you're the one asking for them on an internet forum.

Oh, and BTW you were incorrect because you never mentioned context about the potential replacement of your vehicle...so just because you don't consider a used car as a replacement doesn't mean it's not a replacement. You may consider it irreplaceable because of the sentimental value of it, but the car itself is absolutely replaceable. It's a current-model Audi S4, not a Ferrari Daytona.

I've been in this area for close to 15 years. No place is perfectly safe, and Norfolk isn't the greatest. But it should be fine for one night. Surprised you're not staying closer to Great Neck. My brother has a Condo down that way and it is pretty nice.

For the party some accommodations had been made at the Virginia Beach Resort & Conference Center but I didn't use that service because I didn't know I was going to be able to make the trip until very late in the date (a week ago). Therefore, I started looking around a little further from his house thinking I would have a better shot at finding something.

One of them. I had heard rumors last summer about Audi no longer installing manuals in their 2016 S4's once their current supply had dried up. Don't know if that was true but the day I picked the car up, I did ask my salesman if Audi was not accepting orders for manuals and he confirmed that this was true. He told me that my car was probably in the last production run with manuals being installed.

That would be a bit extreme, don't you think? Unless, of course, someone was a serious threat to me and mine.

Here I am trying to be a nice guy, bolster the compliment that you're a blast to party with, that 70 means nothing because I still enjoy partying with my old man. And I get this flak.

No sir, no flak from this side of the fence. Just having a little fun. All in good humor and good discourse, I can assure you.

Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions and comments. Sorry I'm so anal about this but that's just the way I am with my cars. We wound up taking the truck down and I am so glad I took that decision. We encountered serious traffic delays in Fredericksburg on route 1 (accident) and then again in the Yorktown area, then the really big one getting to the Hampton Roads tunnel. But no problems, all went well. Again thanks for your input.
