Hi everyone,
I thought I'd share my experience regarding a popping sound I started having in my S4.
Many months ago, I brought my car in for service for a bumping noise when driving over speed bumps. Very noticeable, dealership techs noticed it as well. They replaced something with the sway bar - end links? Seems to have been a known issue.
After that work, whether by coincidence or not, I started noticing a popping noise while backing into parking spots on occasion. I brought it back a couple of times for them to look it over as I couldn't quite figure out how to replicate it. It was happening randomly.
A month or so later, after some spirited driving, I learned that if I apply a hard enough brake, I hear the popping noise. Sounded like maybe the weight shift caused something to flex? It would then ALWAYS do the noise when backing into a spot after hard braking - and I could feel it in the steering wheel.
Now, my car went in and the dealership replaced some subframe bolts that jay not have been torqued to spec. Still had the issue. Car went back in this week for the regional Audi field manager to help diagnose it. At this point, they're thinking it's the diffs. They drove me around and did a great job finding all the ways to replicate it. So they are ordering a transmission.
I'm happy to be making progress, as the popping was very loud and very embarrassing with passengers in the car! Throughout all of this, surprisingly, the dealership has been spectacular. They have kept me updated appropriately, pushed through to find a resolution and I couldn't be happier.
