Tiptronic shifts from 4th-2nd at high speeds

So recently I've been having some issues with my tiptronic transmission (shoulda been patient and waited for a manual, but anyways) I'll be on the freeway in 4th gear under load and out of nowhere the car will just drop 2 gears and hit 2nd which then of course shoots my RPMs to damn near 5000.I have an APR stage 2+ ECU and just recently changed it from the stock mode to my mode 3 which is the 93 octane one, I found one thing another forum that said if you go from stock mode to any upgraded mode you'll have to use VAGCOM and mess with the transmission settings. But idk how much sense that makes. Has anybody had any experiences with this? Any insight would very much appreciated, thanks!

You don't need to adjust anything in VAGCOM when upgrading different mode/tune settings with the APR tune. I had a tiptronic 2002 B5 S4 in the past with an APR switchable tune. When my trans did that, it was called hunting for gears. If your gears shifts with a bang then get ready for a new trans or torque converter. The tip trans is prone to bad torque converter seals or the clutch packs wear out. Good luck with your findings on your issue. It will not be cheap if it's transmission related. I have a freshly rebuilt tip trans from my 2002 B5 S4. If you end up needing a new tip trans, let me know and I can sell it to you for a good deal. I live in the Bay Area so, I'm local to you.

It's still an automatic transmission even if in Tip mode. If you press the gas hard enough it will automatically downshift to the lowest gear possible to assist with the acceleration. As long as it is not shifting rough it should be okay.

Thanks for all the input. It just did it to me again while on my way home only difference this time was I was just cruising in the slow lane, first it dropped gears I had hit a little bump in freeway and figured maybe it bumped hard enough to shift the magnets in the gear shift. Then it just did it while rolling around 50-60 dropped from 4-3-2....I'm having my transmission services this weekend so I'll be able to take a look deeper at everything

Hey I dont know if it would make a big difference but I read a few times of people getting tunes for their tiptronic transmissions.

Like a tune specifically for the transmission?

I actually just looked into that last night through APR and GIAC. But I wasn't seeing one for the 2.7....mostly 2.8, 1.8, and 3.0

You talking about the Giac tip chip.

The G.I.A.C. trans chip addresses the "lazy" shifting as delivered from the factory, without losing any smoothness. Users of this chip have described the results as similar to "superbike" shifting! The G.I.A.C. trans chip solves gear "hunting" under full throttle caused by the massive torque of a well designed engine chip.

That's kinda what I gathered from all the reading I did about them. I've seen multiple forum posts on other sites all claiming different solutions for the problem, one guy said he changed his o2 sensor and that fixed it....some just seem kinda bizzare

    Memphis, TN for now!

Forget about tunes for transmission.... you have an issue. Might be small might be big.

Scan for engine and transmission codes and report back.
