rear main seal install advice needed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Ok since I screwed up the rear main seal installation when I put a new single mass fly wheel and clutch assembly into my 2002 with a 1.8. The new clutch set up worked great but the new seal leaked so I'm about to take everything back out and I would prefer not to have the seal leak again so I'm looking for advice on how to install this type of seal.

Get one that has the plastic guide on it already. Those are a breeze to install and almost completely removes the possibility of flipping a lip over.

This^^ I bought mine from the dealer and it came with the plastic guide. Parts that are that deep into the car I'd rather not test aftermarket parts. Here's the factory manual on the replacement. Click

Put a new OEM one in when I did my clutch last summer. Came with guide. Doesn't leak a drop.

My friend managed to accomplish that on my engine anyways.

I recommend lifting up the dust seal with a pick and ensuring the lip seal is properly seated all the way around. Be gentle on the dust seal though

When do you take the plastic guide off from the end of the crank. Do you push the seal on over the end of the crank shaft and then take the guide off after the seal is seated or do you use the bolts to draw the seal until it is seated.

Definitely do not use bolts. Seat the plastic on the end of the crank and gently push the seal on. Again, ensure the lip seal has not inverted. It really isn't that hard but it is very easy to mess up

This video is on a BMW E46 but shows exactly how the rear main seal should be installed. Skip to 35:00

Thanks for the video I see what I have to do to install the seal. I'm ready to take the transmission out tomorrow only have disconnect the mounts and pull it out.
