    Question Bad Rocker Arms/Followers?

Long story short, picked up a 2005 S4 Cab in January and with a slight tick. Didn't think too much of it at the time but after driving it a little bet started to get worse. I paid the dealer to "diag" the car and they after taking my money simply said "its a lifter but we don't know whats causing it without opening the engine up." Not wanting to spend that kind of money on the dealer touching my car anymore I took it home. after doing some research and tool purchases I pulled the engine out, took the cams off and inspected the rocker arm's and lifters. Being hydrolic lifters i understand they use oil pressure to set the gap of the lifter in the rocker arm but only some of the lifters move (no oil pressure?) and some don't move at all (seized or pressurized?). I took one of the rocker arms in to the dealer and they said the lifter that doesn't move at all is seized and needs to be replaced. I was under the impression with hydraulic lifters there shouldn't be much if any movement if there's oil in them and if you can compress then by hand they are "collapsed" and need to be replaced/rebuilt so this had me confused.

I'm hoping that one of you out there has had more experience with these and can tell me for sure if there should be movement or not. if there should be movement than I need 6 new rocker arms and if it should have no movement I need 4 new ones.... and the cheapest genuine audi rocker arms I can find are at ecs for $250 each. Really hoping to not spend $1-1.5k for this repair. Also, are there other engines I can pull from that would be easier to find in a scrap yard? audiusaparts.com have them for $230 each but say they also fit 05-10 A6, 05-06 allroad, 01-03 S8. does this sound right?

also worth noting is the dealer i bought the car from had the timing guides replaced at a shop and they did a shitty job. there is silicone everyone. they decided to add a bead of it instead of replacing gaskets so maybe there is some clogging the oil feet tube to the 5-8 cylinder bank?

I can't help you on the lifter arms but the rear timing covers don't have gaskets, they need to be sealed with silicone gasket maker. That said there shouldn't be a ton squished out everywhere but some visible is to be expected. If that is what you are referring to anyway

can you pin point the tick? you can probably pick up a automotive stethoscope at a parts store or an autozone.

highly highly doubt its due to the rear upper or lower covers.

i'm not super familiar with these systems, but a clogged oil feed sounds plausible, especially with that excess sealant. i have heard of people "rebuilding" lifters, though; maybe there's some junk in there or the rocker that's preventing full movement. at least disassembly might give you a better idea of what needs replacement:

These are not the same design of lifters for the bhf heads.
