    B8 2.0T - New Long Block

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guy's,

I'll be picking up my 2010 B8 2.0T with a shiny new long block installed!

Any wise words for someone with just enough engine knowledge to possibly be considered dangerous?

    Thanks!

Be gentle for the first 1k miles or so, vary load and rpms, preferably change the oil and run it normally after that.

I'm in the opposite camp....you do want to vary load and RPMs (city driving, not highway if possible), change the oil at 20 miles. Then, allow the engine to get up to normal operating temperature and then drive it like you stole it! Change oil at 500 miles and carry on!

I'm with Dub_Prime. I've built many engines and trust me, you CAN see the difference when a motor has been broken in properly vs. pedal to the metal on the first few days. This is in regards to the rotating assembly though. Anything else on the motor; after a few miles, it's already seated properly (i.e. valvetrain, belts, pumps, pulleys, etc.).

Change the oil at 1000 miles. The shop 'should' have already changed the oil once. Might be worth asking to know; it'll save ya a few bucks on the oil.

Anything from 800-1000 miles is the green light area to harp on it. My rule of thumb is this:

    First 100 miles: stay under 3k RPM's.
100-500 miles: 'ok' to get the revs a little higher but stay under 5k. As the mileage increase, so can the length of time into 3-5k RPM range.
800-1000 miles: 'ok' to rev higher, but I wouldn't "hold" the revs in that range
    1000 miles+: game on!

I have heard discussions that a few wide-open-throttle low to medium RPM runs (fully warmed-up engine of-course) are needed to seat the rings, then followed by some closed-throttle engine braking. Then change the oil at 1000 miles.

I have done that on all my new cars, between 0 and 1000 miles, and have always had good long term results (no oil consumption).

I slowly moved into the higher rpms engine braking most of the time so it would seat the rings across all situations on and off boost, by 1000-1200 miles I was driving it hard again.

    B8 2.0T - New Long Block

Wow thanks for the info guys. The reckon it's got a few dozen hours of "break in" done before I leaves the factory but I'm going to just keep to the middle ground I reckon. Lots of load at low to medium engine speed.

One thing he did do though is rip out my R8 coil packs and told me to leave them out. Given the warranty on the block I figure I should listen but I'm quite tempted to just chuck them in and switch the stock ones back in for servicing lol. Maybe I'll just give it a few weeks and let everything bed in before I play with it ;)

Thanks again for the advice guys. Gotta bloody love this audizine community :)

Nah. I think he was just saying what he was meant to say. Not a listed stock part yadda yadda yadda.

I asked him if having them would compromise the warranty on the block and he just said "it shouldn't... Just don't put them in RIGHT now"

Might just leave them out until first service to be safe.

Hey random question too. Got a burning rubbery sort of smell in the cabin on the way home last night. Had a couple of little hints of a smell since new block but this was actually a bit strong. Vented the cabin and it didn't come back again so I'm going to assume it's just new seals unless anyone has any other ideas? :\
