    Steering rack assistance/question

    Hey everybody,

I need a bit of help with some steering rack issues I'm having. At least, I'm ASSUMING they're steering rack issues. I've got a fair bit of play in my steering, resulting in wobble over bumps and "hop" at high speed while cornering.

I was just under the car after checking out Hazziar's thread and I'm slightly confused, as I expected to find loose bolts. First, I pulled the battery, and the bolt under there was tight. The battery bracket was broken but the steering bolt was tight. The bolt by the battery booster was tight as well. Under the car is where I have the question, because Hazziar has a different engine, and maybe a different steering rack?

The question: Is the third bolt (under the car) on the driver's side or the passenger's side? I found a (tight) 10mm 12point bolt on the driver's side kind of below the the coolant tank, but on the passenger side it looks like there might be a bolt missing. Also, I'm assuming we only have 3 bolts like the S4, but then again, the B6 1.8t apparently had 4, so....

If there IS a bolt missing, hooray, I can deal with that. If the bolt under the coolant tank is the only one underneath, then I'm going to have to look elsewhere for solutions.

Other known issues with the car: transmission mount is loose, center bolt just spins. Can't get it to screw in, so I'm assuming the top nut is by the side of some road somewhere. I also have a leaky CV boot that probably needs to be replaced (or maybe the axle), but the only symptom I'm having of any kind is the play in the steering wheel - no vibration at speed, no weird sounds.

I've also just replaced my entire suspension with the Koni FSD/Eibach kit AND swapped both engine mounts, but the problem with the steering pre-dated those upgrades, and hasn't been changed by them.

thanks for any help and/or ideas

I would go with the missing bolt. There should be a bolt on each side and the one under the batt tray

Looks like one of the three comes up from the bottom.
