Decided to put together a quick little step by step of my S door jamb cleaning because people seem to wonder how I did it on my Eight. This probably only needs to be done once a year, if that, depends on grease application methods.
Here is my Eight before and after:
Order of operation needs to be considered. If washing my engine bay, I wash that first, then the exterior. Same should be done for the door jambs. I didnt here because I wasnt planning to do it, until my schedule opened up while washing the exterior. Do one door area at a time. When doing the fronts, keep the rear door closed and do that jamb at the same time. Once you are done with the front, close the front and open the rear and do it too from that angle.
So here is what they looked like:
Dusty more than anything. And a little bit of white grease at the front hinge.
If you have more grease in the hinges, like my Eight had, use some spray nine, wipe with a paper towel to remove as much as you can. Then spray nine again and use a plastic brush to agitate it then jump to the mitt stage. The goal is to try and avoid getting a pile of grease on your door jamb mitt.
If its more so dusty, then just hit it with some water:
Grab your dirty mitt... The grey is for paint, green is for wheels and yellow is for jambs.
And just get in there:
Get the underside of the door too:
Rinse:
This will happen:
Wipe up:
And continue to wipe down the rest of the open areas, this is my door jamb shammy:
I wont use my door jamb shammy on the hinge areas, so I use an unsuspecting decommissioned dish rag. Alternatively you can use compressed air here. If you dont dry it off, you'll get water spots:
Et voila:
Some people like to dress the rubber components, but I'd rather not as it attracts dirt quicker.
I havent re-applied any grease to either cars yet, and probably wont until they start to creak. And when they do, I'll apply it in a more control manner, rather than the spray and pray approach.
Enjoy your clean hinges every time you get in!
