    Ultimate Tune options thread...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    HI everybody,

First sorry for my english this is nots my language ;)

Basically, I am looking for the good tune option (for my 2016 S3) and I've read almost all I can through different forums.
I am a bit lost despite I am very used to tune my cars . (ex B8 S4, TTS, S5 B4...)
I just want to summarize what it seems right for each tuning option.
I Hope you can add new facts, maybe point pointing out wrong statements in my researches, and at the end of the day making this thread useful for everyone summarizing all our experience about tuning option for our platform . The idea is to go further than the classical "choose the closest tuner" .. which is not wrong but...

MAy be the good way to begin for each-one would be : What was \ will be your choice and why?

I am not interested in Module like JB1/neuspeed etc... so I will not debate it. Opinion on it would be interesting though.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    - APR : Many feedbacks. Seems extremely strong in terms of torque. MAybe too much for 91oct gas such that they also offer a low torque tune. The numbers seems the highest of the gang ... however some people tends to prefer eurodyne especially in the top end where power tends to drop highly with APR tunes.
APR needed several upgrades to get a combo ECU/TCU stable and without bugs. The TCU version before the last upgrade caused many frustrations... Now the last combo seems a blast to drive. The main drawback compared to their competitors is the lack of 'flash at home' option through a controller. No news about providing a such feature in the future form APR.
Overall a good customer service. No info about their price.

    - Unitronic: No much review. Very little actually. Ive read the best and the worst for MK7 and 8V. So mixed review but to be honest much more good reviews. On the road, the tune seems weaker than APR, which is consistent with the torque numbers of both tuners. Extremely good customer service on every review. PRice are pretty cheap. They offer the ability to tune the car from home. According to Unitronic, the flash back to stock option put the "actual OEM file" in the car so in theory enable to avoid TD1. But they refuse to be categorical on that an didin't answer about the flash counter parameter question

    - Eurodyne: Actually to me it seems the best option... The numbers and the review on the road are very strong like APR with a bettre top end beahvior. Several poster said that they flashed back to stock for major repair under warranty without being flagged TD1. However, the customer service seems horrible, (almost impossible to join them by phone or email...). Moreover had been issues with some versions espcially stage 2 and upgrades have been needed which has been a problem for some people amid bad communications. Prices are in the normal.

    - GIAC : Almost nothing except a little thread on vwvortex. Good review. The flash at home option wouldn't allow to put the real OEM file. Just a stock parameters mode.

    - REVO: Like GIAC.

    - United Motorsport: Almost nothing except that it seems to output by far the best numbers. The car flashed pull like a monster as usual with UM (same stories on other platforms) . So on the paper the best tune. But some logs tends to prove boost value above 27PSI... so what about long term reliability? Flash at home option but I don't know if we can put back the OEM file.

    Thank you for your contribution.

You pretty much hit all of the points. Also, I think Eurodyne is the only tune that allows you to flash between stages for free. Also their TCU tune is only $375 compared to other companies who charge twice that. I wasn't aware that United Motorsport provided a flash at home option. If you have the ability to flash back to stock with them, that would be amazing. I hear nothing, but great things about them.

    in for this

i would love the option to have a "basemap" with the ability to make my own changes such as launch rpm, shift rpm, how much boost off the line, and custom changes to fuel/timing table as every car is a little different

i said these same things for my b8 s4 and everyone laughed at me , yet those are all common changes with almost every other market out there

For the parts I'm aware of, that sounds about right.

To add, I've been beating the sh*t out of my apr tuned s3, no ecu/tcu hiccups or clutch slippages, they are performing great.

Thanks for starting this thread. And your english is better than most native speakers!

I, too, am interested in a ECU and TCU tune. Anyone have a view on the performance of the various TCU tunes.

Just confirmed with United Motorsport that they don't offer flashing at home at this time, but they might in the future. Seems like their dsg tune is the best one out on the market right now though

I have the APR Stage 1 93 octane high torque tune and the DSG tune. It is very strong performer and I have not had any problems or issues with it.

    Hey Rickson,

I have been on the fence myself for which tune to go with I have had GIAC and APR tunes on past cars and can't complain for either company. The TD1 flag is something to consider and I believe that Eurodyne and Unitroinic have a better product to shield you from being flagged but I don't believe it's foolproof no matter what any tuner says.

I'm currently leaning on the Unitronic tune myself and the fact they are 20 min. away from me does sway me a little I must admit. I figured having a local tuner next door wouldn't hurt and many members have had positive reviews and experience with them.

I have APR stage 2 ECU #93+TCU upgrades on my 2015 A3 for a year and half (did stage 1 right after i got the car, TCU in last august and stage 2 in last december). I'm happy with it, especially after the upgrade of the TCU software.I still have slipping clutches but so much better than without the upgrade. One bug(or maybe not) that I have so far with the new upgrade of the TCU software is almost every time when I switch from N to D and move my foot from brake to gas with relatively fast speed, it feels like the car hit on something but all i have to do is just release the gas. I'm not sure is this a bug or something else, but I am happy with APR
