Just wanted a little help here. I am a huge Audi fan having had a TT ALMS, R8 V8, RS5 cab, A7 TDI, and now an RS7. The RS7 is simply amazing with effortless power, near flawless fit/finish, and room for family. I've got the bug to get a 2016 911 GTS, but am torn and don't want to take the leap and then have regrets. I have driven one and it is definitely more of a "sports car" with more connection to the road than the RS7. I could still fit my kids in the back (tiny seats I know). Anyone had a GTS to give me any opinions? It would be a daily driver. I think it would be fun to have one of the last NA engines since they are going turbo. The 911 design has been around forever - so in a sense, they are a dime a dozen, yet the latest GTS package looks good and they seem like one of the gold standards of great driving cars. Thank you in advance for your insight and opinions.

As long as you're at it, why not a GT3. No back seats though

There is no way that the 911 will be any kind of substitute for what the RS7 provides. It is an apples to oranges comparison. The practicality combined with the prodigious thrust of the RS7 will simply not be matched by the 911. That said, Porsche vehicles deliver an overall driving experience that is very hard to beat. Kids will grow, and the puny excuse for a back seat in the 911 won't cut it whatsoever. Car seats are a struggle at best and then they will be extremely uncomfortable. If you have another practical vehicle you can use when the need arises, then, by all means, go for it. The drive of the Porsche will leave you wanting nothing. But as an only vehicle, I wouldn't do it.

If you are looking for something more engaging than the RS7, but with the daily practicality you need, I would take a serious look at the M4. I was in the same boat a number of years back. I wanted a precision, engaging car, but I needed to be able to transport my kids. I bought an e92 M3 coupe for 4 years and couldn't have been happier. The M4 will also provide that feeling of torque that you are used to in the RS7 with much better handling and driver feedback.

The GT3 is very track focused. It will be brutal on the street unless you live in a place where the roads are consistently pristine. The OP wants a daily driver. I have always been a fan of the GTS range. It is like a "Street+" package.

I have a GT3, it's my second 911. Both have been great, but there's no way I would have one as my only car. It's a great complement to the S7.

2 completely different cars, I don't think I want to take 911 to replace RS7 for DD duty and with similar reason on an opposite side, I don't take RS7 to replace 911 for track duty either.

I've got an air-cooled 911. The difference between the air-cooled cars and the water-pumpers is a wide chasm in and of itself. The chasm between a 991 GTS and an RS7 could hardly be wider. Audis and Porsches compliment each other as they scratch different types of driving itches, that's why you see a lot of people owning both. If you have the means, have both, but one is not a replacement for the other as a DD.

Nice. Which generation? I want one bad. Still haven't driven though. I was thinking 997.2 for the longest time, but 991.1 is growing on me

Ha! Appreciate everyone's input thus far. The kids would be picked up from school only occasionally and taken for short rides home. Probably could work - but definitely not a comfortable fit like the RS7. The RS7 is such a complete package (I don't track cars) that it is hard to beat. Unfortunately I can't swing both at once. Chewing it over and hopefully will make the right (enough) decision.

I've been having the same thought lately - trading in the S6 for a 911s. I've almost purchased one a few times in the last few years but never pulled the trigger. I also have kiddies to accommodate - they can probably fit in the 911 for the time being, but I agree that they are both very different cars. In terms of engine thrust and even 0-60, etc.. it would be a downgrade going from the s6 to the 911, but there is something about Porsche...

Also, I briefly owned a Macan thinking it would be a 911 alternative with real back seats - but it wasn't. I'm also keeping an eye on the 2017/2018 RS5 since it would be a more practical choice to the 911.

    How about 2015 GTS and 12-14 A6, that's like a price of 16 GTS.
Then you will still have a nice sedan for kids

I really want a Porsche too and been trying to think of different ways to do it. Which car, which options, which year... There is a lot to consider.
The RS7 is just so amazing, intoxicating as someone said.
I probably need to first solve this two car garage problem and then I can have both.

I have an extra garage spot but it doesn't as much as it sounds. An extra car also means extra insurance, and coverage for Porsche's isn't cheap.

Silly..definitely not a downgrade going from an S6 to 911 in terms of engine thrust performance, 0-60 times or pretty much any other performance metric. Simply very different cars.

Perhaps.. however, a 2016 S6 with a tune (~550hp?) is definitely a class in performance above a 911s (although 2017 911s models will come close). Not to mention the torque advantage of a 4.0T. I agree though, definitely different cars. Given my bumper-to-bumper commute, I doubt I need any extra HP anyway lol.

A stock 991 is a superior all-around performance car than an S6, tuned or not, in handling, braking, steering, grip, acceleration, etc. Throw some minimal mods on the 991 and it walks away even more from the S6. Both great cars, but the C7 platform, in any configuration, is not close to the all around performance platform that the 991 is. For this reason many owners have both.

Actually it can be. My Cayman GTS is rare and as such, has a low rate of theft as well a low rate of accidents. Consequently it cost me less than $800 per year to insure. Buy comparison, my S6 cost $1400 per year

Interesting. I turned in a my 991s for the S7 two months ago. The 991 was AMAZING on the track and was actually really nice as a drivers car. The 991 is a huge improvement over the 997 in terms of comfort and ride quality. However, just because it has back seats doesn't mean it works. I have two young kids, and one is in a booster seat. The seats themselves are fine, but I found myself crammed forward so they could have enough legroom. I'm surprised nobody has mentioned a Panamera 4S (post facelift) or the Panamera Turbo as an option. Both have tune's available, and they are insane even as a stock setup.

Two different cars. RS7 is a beast meant to travel distances quickly and in complete comfort for 4 people. A 911 is a sports car that connects you to the road that no Audi can do (including the R8). The rear seats in the 911 are a joke. You need to own another car to use when traveling with more than 2 people .... Comfortably.

What about a Cayman GT4 as a secondary "fun / track" car? Opinions?
I really don't know much about Porsches besides I really want a GT3 RS and that's not in the cards for at least a few years so I'm willing to compromise.

GT4 as a track car would be all sorts of fun. Those are true manual's, no PDK though. Not sure if that's your cup of tea or not.

I have both an S6 and 911 GTS. The GTS is everything you think it is, just not a practical only car. If your wife has a family trip vehicle though . . .

Thanks again for the replies everyone. I don't live close to a dealer or the car I would be buying, but took my children to sit in a 2015 911 turbo my friend has to see how they fit. It really wasn't bad at all in the context of short trips. We have a family vehicle for most day to day and travel use for them. If they were teenagers, that would be a different story, but for 10 and 7, I think it would work for a couple of years. The interior of the 911 is very nice, but more of a focused, well-made sporty feel than the luxurious diamond-stitched expanses of the RS7. To each his own - I do feel the GTS package with the alcantara and red contrast stitching does liven things up in the GTS. Hinkley - your GTS is drop dead gorgeous. Nicely done on the color choices in and out!
