    Oil in drivers side intercooler

I'm working on doing my timing belt this weekend and drained a bit of oil out from the drivers intercooler. Past experience tells me turbo oil seals. But a search shows this is common and a catch can is needed. Any thoughts? The car runs and drives great. No exhaust smoke, no vag codes.

Quite common and "normal". I assume you have to add oil at some point between oil changes.

Catch can is not required, per se, but some folks recommend it. Biggest issue with catch cans are when you forget to drain it.

That seems to be quite a bit of oil usage. I don't have to add any to mine.

The amount of usage has not changed in the last 30k miles. I have owned turbo cars that use almost a qt per 1000 miles. Dealer said that's within spec. So I'm not worried at all with only a qt between changes.

You should be the one to consider yourself lucky. Almost everyone stateside has to add oil. I think Adam (aluthman) is close to fixing his consumption issues, but that required rebuilding the entire way.
