I know a lot has been written about this, please help if you know.

We just got down to the belt, removing stuff.
The timing belt is quite loose. Should it be?

Thanks for the answer, an the invatation to search. Trust me i did search. My tensioner does not have a pin or a hole for a pin to hold it in a compressed position.
    It is different.
I expect it is failed. The car was running fine, no noises, no problems.

The B6 doesn't have a pin retainer style tensioner. I think that's on the B5s. The B6 has a weird little fork looking thing that goes in the side of the tensioner. Either way, the tensioner rod should not move easily at all. If it does, it's shot. It could just be that the tensioner pulley is way out of adjustment. The way it's adjusted is a little odd and takes a little getting used to. Take the 13mm nut loose and if you have a pin wrench, put it in the two holes and turn it counter-clockwise and see if the belt tightens. If it does, tighten the nut and let the tensioner settle. Once the tensioner is settled there should be 6mm-10mm of the rod sticking out. If there is more or less, then either tighten or loosen the tensioner pulley and try again.
