    Intake too loud?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, first time starting a topic, so please let me know if it needs to be moved.

Bought a 2014 Monsoon Grey S4 after having a 2012 A4 for a while, and couldn't wait to start bolting stuff onto it.

One of the first things I did was ad the ECS Kolhlefuser intake. Very high quality parts and a fairly straight forward install, but now I am left with a bit of an issue.

I had watched tons of YouTube videos, done my research, but when I started driving the car, the SC whine was a LOT louder than I expected. Unfortunately I am at the point where am considering selling the intake and going back to stock.

However, I love the performance gain and the look of the intake, and was curious if anybody had experimented with sound proofing it a bit. I am considering putting something like Dynamat on the inside of the carbon lid. Worth a shot, or am I going end up just as loud and with a ruined intake?

Tell me you are not serious lol. If anything I'm sure everyone here would want their intake loud as possible.

That intake is way too loud. Pack it up and send it to me. I'll send you my APR unit in return and suffer through it for you LOL
Life has taught me never try to make something idiot proof, they'll simply come up with a better idiot.
I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
I have neither the time, nor the crayons to explain this to you properly.

unfortunately (for you) carbon fiber only amplifies any noise an intake would create. I would sell the intake to a member who likes loud intakes (I'm not a fan), and simply just run a filter such as an aFe and grab a larger intake tube to slap onto the stock airbox such as a 034Motorsports one, and drill a hole at the front of the airbox. That's the set-up I run currently, and the s/c sound is very mild to almost non-existent at WOT.

Thanks Loe, that's what I figured would be the solution.

But just for arguments sake, does anybody believe lining the inside of the carbon lid with Dynamat would dampen the sound at all?

I love intakes on nearly any car but not this one...the SC whine gives me a headache. It's cool for 10 minutes but after an hour of driving I realize why Audi spent all the time and money in designing an intake that minimizes the whine. I wish there was an intake that amplified the induction noise without the bloody whine.

    Cheers,

I bought the USP intake system and the whine was way to loud for my taste. I sold it 3 days later. If you want a smooth supercharger whine I suggest to go with the Eurocode TRUfit system (180$). Using your stock airbox will cut the noise a lot.

    Intake too loud?

Remove the helmholtz resonator in your stock air box and install it in your new intake. It won't cancel the frequency (sound you hear) exactly due to differing tube length, area, and cavity volume difference with the ECS box vs OEM but should change the sound a little.

Trade your car in for a turbocharged car. The dominant sound you will hear with superchargers is the whine of the blower. The lobes spinning compressing the air won't be as loud as a turbo spooling with open element filter and bpv to dump excess boost to atmosphere off throttle.

I never thought I'd like that whine while watching videos online. Then got the ECS intake, an oh my! I can't get enough of it. People turn when I open her up coming down the street! Sounds like a Jet!

Contact ECS and purchase the silicone tube. Doesn't amplify as much as carbon.

Thanks for the advice. FWIW I've owned turbocharged, supercharged, and NA cars...they all have their merits and I'm quite well acquainted with them.

Which ECS intake do you have? The one with the cover or without? I'm sure that would make a difference in sound. I love the sc whine though and for me it's only noticeable when getting on the throttle more than normal with my cts intake

I'm surprised. The ecs is one of the quietest on the market. It's why I bought it. How long have you had it? If it's just been a day or two then give it more time. I found that after day 4 I didn't even notice the intake anymore because I wasn't pushing the car to "see if there was a difference", I just drove it.

Exactly my thoughts. The intake I have before my ECS intake was significantly louder than this one, and I have the Carbon tube.

And also as Sigaddict stated, if you drive it normally you hardly hear it at all. That's why I love this intake so much. Which my last one you heard it all the time and it was obnoxious.

    Intake too loud?

It's the intake with the carbon lid. Sounds like I should give it a bit more time, only had it installed a few days and have been driving it pretty hard. I had not heard one in person yet, and as I said, just happened to be quite a bit louder (or more prominent?) than expected, particularly at low speeds.

Maybe a new exhaust would help :-D

I believe APR had the quietest intake (and most expensive)? That's what i've been reading anyway

You hear the whine cruising? I can't hear until I put load above 3k rpm.

I have had mine installed for a few weeks now. I must admit with the air on just pulling away from the light I get a bit more whine than I was hoping. Not sure how loud it really is outside but I figure if I can hear it inside it is audible outside. It sound down low in the rpms and under load is a bit different than when your on it. Hard to describe but more like a whistle than the normal whine.

I have a stock exhaust so that may be why I hear it more as well. Not enough to make me pull it off though.

All you guys who say you can't hear the whine under normal driving don't live in mountainous states.... On country roads simply following traffic I can plainly hear mine up hills. Kinda annoying. I wish there was a way to turn it on/off, like the soundaktor but for real. I'd like to try modifying my stock box to do something like that

I'm with the OP'er. When I was in my 20's and just starting out in professional world, it was cool to hear the S/C'er whine on my GTP's. Today as an executive with a higher level career, it's like a 50yr old man wearing skinny jeans. No thanks.

My suggestion is to go with the ECS TRUFit Air Intake. I love mine. I can barely hear the intake inside if the radio is off and the windows are open. Otherwise it's only audiable outside and even then it's very tasteful. Noticeable but not screaming hooker loud.

I don't get it, none of the intakes can be heard when driving normally
that's what I remember from mine and I had a Roc Euro intake which is the loudest I think. Sounds like the OP needs and exhaust to quiet the intake down if he doesn't have one

If you guys don't like the SC whine you're in a pickle. Cause very few intakes are quiet.

Why did you get an intake? You obviously must have seen videos of the intakes and the majority have an audible whine. Just a weird thing to complain about.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I would like to buy an intake but want one without the whine. I haven't purchased one though I have heard a few on S4s.

every intake will make noise. the only one is to hybrid stock with aftermarket. stock airbox, drill out the large hole at the front of the box, change to an AFE filter, and replace the charge pipe with whoever will sell you theirs (I used APR). best improvement without any noticeable increase in sound.
