Headlight flicker.. not the normal suspects?

So I've had a very intermittent headlget flicker on both sides. Like once on a drive at night. Because it was so infrequent, I paid it no mind. Tonight driving home however it flickered probably 20 sides. Primarily driver side but sometimes passenger as well.

I replaced the bulbs with Osram CBIs maybe a year and a half ago, so that seems like it wouldn't be the bulbs. The lights fire up fine, so ballasts don't seem to be the culprit either. Is there anything else I should be looking for? I'm worried they're gonna give out on me on a drive home.

I had this issue on my old B7. Mine seemed to go away if I turned the lights off then back on again once they started flickering. Got progressively worse as time went on however. Ended up being the ballast.

Yea. Passenger was definitely worse than the driver for me. Passenger was like once a day would flicker. Driver was like once every week or two.

how are you guys wiring it up? do they have independent earths or tapped into the current lighting earth?

Also, low voltage in your vehicle’s electrical system can be caused by a defective battery, a poorly performing alternator or the use of daytime running lights. In addition, some newer vehicles have sensors that activate by sending a low voltage to the headlights when they are turned off.

A relay harness allows the ballast to draw electricity from the vehicle battery directly, which eliminates low voltage issues. In some cases, a capacitor is needed to work together with the relay harness to ensure proper voltage is applied to the ballast.

High-power capacitors allow increased power to reach the ballast, which will then feed the proper voltage to the headlights. This is the most common fix for flickering HID lights and often solves other problems, such as eliminating the “headlights out” indicator on your dashboard display.

Interesting. Never thought of that. Did the switch seem faulty in any other way?
