    B9 Steering Wheel in B8.5?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently had the opportunity to drive the new B9 A4 (loaner while my allroad was converted to use AT&T SIM cards. I really like the aesthetics of the new design that includes a heated steering wheel option. This got me wondering if there is the possibility of retro-fitting a B9 wheel into a B8.5. Anyone know? It is probably to soon to have been attempted. Challenges would include wiring at the least.

A flat bottom B9 steering wheel would trigger the mod virus...

I suspect it hasn't even been close to attempted yet.

With the added functionality control for the virtual cockpit, heated wheel, etc... I suspect there would probably be some significant wiring and harness challenges.

True, but this is a pretty big leap of tech from the B8.5 to B9. Will it be possible? Most likely. But is there a large chance it will be harder than previous? Also most likely.

I wonder how different the wiring would be if someone is able to source a wheel that doesn't have the added functionality for the virtual cockpit. Either way, there is no real way to tell unless someone has a wheel in their possession.

It was once thought impossible to retrofit MMI. Now a shit ton of people have done it. History repeats itself and what is high tech today will be pretty basic a few years from now.

It appears to me that Audi has switched back to a single stage airbag for the B9, just as they decided to do with the A3/S3 and mk3 TT. The B8 has a dual-stage airbag, and thus modification or some wiring magic would likely be required to have a safe airbag system.

B9 unit- notice there is only one plug going into it.

Unfortunately the controls won't work with the B8.5 models. An analogy I've used before:

"The steering wheel speaks German and the car speaks English."

This is the same reason the 8V, C7, etc wheels don't work in the B8.5 as well. The controls speak a different language than the car does so they just don't understand each other.

The controls on a B9 wheel will do nothing for a B8.5 out of the box. Testing adapters to make them work, but again there won't be a bunch of added functions. The adapter just translates to B8.5 functionality.

Shoot! I was just browsing technical info on the B9 models of A4/A5 and got excited about the available heated steering wheel. Of course Google led me here when I tried to determine if I could put one on my 2013 A5, and now you have gone and killed that idea! Having experienced how nice that feature is in northern climates in cold winter months, it was one thing i missed after my previous MB E320. Guess I am stuck keeping good gloves in the car

There is a round heatable wheel now which wasn't something regularly available in the B8/B8.5 models, but sadly still no heatable flat-bottom wheels.

Alex, the flat bottom is not the thing I most want, it was the heating capability. If I could get that on a B8/8.5 with a round wheel (with paddles?), that would satisfy me! From what you wrote previously, the B9 communicates very differently so won't work. Did I understand correctly, or is there still a chance I can get a heated wheel on a B8/8.5 vehicle?

The bigger issue with the B8/B8.5 is that there is no slip ring or HVAC system that works with a heated wheel at all. The B9 does have this feature now, but obviously those parts are not going to work with the B8/B8.5 models, sorry.
