[HELP!!!]Strong gas smell around right rear wheel well

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There's always a strong fuel smell around right rear wheel well(red square) after a drive no matter the tank is full or low, but it's completely smell-free inside the car. Quite worrying on the car is gonna explode one day since the temperature here often goes over than 100 degree

Car is 1.8T CVT FWD, I believe the fuel pump is *in the trunk. Used the VCDS but no code.

Could anyone shed me some light? I'll be very appreciate.

The fuel filter is right in front of that wheel. I wonder if you are having any issues with that or the connections around it?

Fuel filter was replaced and checked after I found the smell last year.

Sounds like a leak near the LDP. This should help. Click

Also, on the CVT I believe the fuel pump is in the trunk.

ldp is on the other side. pull your rear seat out and pull the black cap off (3 gold Phillips screws) and see if your fuel pump cap is wet

There is an evap filter that exists on the other side of the rear passenger wheel well. Paper filter could be clogged especially if you're getting any secondary air "incorrect air flow" codes. I'm trying to hunt down a similar smell even after replacing the fuel filter and fuel pump. Not sure if that filer could be causing the issue.

What model year is your car? I know when I replaced the fuel pump on my 2002 B6 (3.0) the replacement (VDO - OEM manufacturer) had an extra nozzle on it that had to be capped off with a special coupling piece from Audi. It was available at the dealership for about $12. Might be something to look into, good luck!

Yes edited it, thanks for the tip. I blamed it to my bad memory lol.

I have no idea where the LDP and evap canister located on a FWD car?

My pump is located in the rear right trunk. In my theory, if the pump is leaking, I can smell it inside the car right?

The other side(driver/left side) of the rear wheel is smell-free too, the smell only found in right rear wheel. And I don't have any code. But I'll try to check it from this way. Thank you!

Evap canister maybe? Do you top off your car when you gas up? If so the canister can fill up with fuel and could cause that smell.

This! You probably will not be able to smell it inside the car because it has the cover on. Audi/VW fuel pumps are notorious for a tiny hair crack right in the dead center of the housing. It almost looks like a casting mark but its a crack. Easy to inspect and easy to fix.

Thx man, I'll look into this also!

The inspection won't be easy tho, have to remove a lot of trims to get the pump .

Gas smell in right rear wheel well

    UPDATE:

Last week I went to the shop to removed LR wheel and inner liner, we found a broken "breather line" next to the fueling pipe which causing the leaking. Had it cut and reconnected with a short silicone tube. After 400+ miles test, the smell was gone
