4.0TT Engine Oil Change - Frequency?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi Guys,

I have a question for you 4.0TT owners.....

At what mileage/frequency do you change your engine oil?

I've had my car (new) for 6 months now and it's covered almost 10,000 miles. It's on the variable service interval setting, and the MMI says it doesn't need an oil change for another 18 months or 6000 miles. As the car was new when l got it, it's never had an oil change - although lve topped up about 2litres in this time.

Should l do an oil change at 10,000 miles, independent of the dealer/MMI recommendation? I'm not tracking the car, and it's not ECU tuned. Is there any benefit (other than my own feelings) to doing an early oil change?

    Cheers,
    John.

You've had it since new and never done an oil change? and you've driven it 10k miles?

First oil change (which should be free) is at 5k miles, and then every 10k miles after that - per audicare.

That is Audi USA recomendation. Its not what Audi Europe recommends.

Does the US market have variable rate service intervals?

Blatant thread jack sorry OP. Do you guys recommend the first oil change to be performed sooner then the 5k AudiCare free one to maximize engine "health" etc? I plan to keep the car a long time, and am aware I'd have to pay out of pocket for the first one. If so at what milage? 1500 or so?

First oil change is fine at 5k. You don't have to do one sooner and then 5k. Every 10k after that.

If you are going to keep the car forever, I think it's a good idea. Otherwise I doubt you will ever notice the difference in engine life that it makes from circulating the additional metal and particulates for the extra 3500 miles.

The whole oil change every 5000 mile thing is overkill. Tuned or not. Unless you are really driving your car hard all the time, and with frequent short trips, I wouldn't worry about it. What is more important is that you use a high grade synthetic oil. The recommendation for frequent changes comes from the time when there were no synthetic oils. Todays formulations are much much improved. Porsche, for instance, also recommends changes every 10,000 miles. I had my initial free oil change done at 5000 miles. Then at 15,000, then at about 22,000 and again at 29,000 (only because my brake fluid needed changing and I didn't feeling like making another trip for the oil a few months later). I will get the next oil change at 35,000 with the major service on my S6.

Don't sweat it. 10,000 mile intervals are fine, or maybe 7500 if you are really concerned. Topping up in between as needed also adds fresh oil although I haven't needed a spot of extra oil in 30,000 miles of ownership. This, however, can be influenced by how you break in your car.

I think that the 5k first oil change is to get you back into their service as soon as possible to that you don't end up going to a different dealer.

The USA oil change frequency in the maintenance schedule was changed by AOA for the 2017 models (10k first, then every 20k)

My 2016 had 5k for first oil change in the manual & MMI.

From 2017 schedule: "Minor Maintenance Service
First at 10,000 miles or 1 year after delivery, whichever occurs first. Thereafter, every 20,000 miles or two
years, whichever occurs first......Engine oil / Oil filter - Change oil and replace filter ....

    1. First Minor Maintenance service at 10,000 miles or 1 year after delivery, whichever occurs first. Minor maintenance services thereafter occur at intervals of 20,000 miles or 2 years after the
last minor maintenance service, whichever occurs first."

I asked this question as well and for a 2017 it actually lists 10,000 miles for the first oil change. It says this is the warranty/maintenance guide and in my car.

The 2016 or earlier user's manual may be different?

I personally think that's too long, especially for the first oil change. But I'm not sure what in going to do: do it at 5k or wait until 10k per the book.

If your going to do it for peace of mind, ld consider using an Indy to do just an oil change, then leave the 10k to the dealer.

this is the standard. Any more frequent provides very little additional protection and costs u money...8 quarts and a filter if u do it yourself. I recently got an Audi oil change promotion for 69.95. So the regular price must be higher. The frequency seems to be a personal preference. Going more than 10k miles is pushing it. Just my opinion...

I change mine every time it hits minimum which is usually 8-9k miles so 1/2 of variable service recommendation. Get an Indy to do it, usually costs about just over a ton all in.

    Audicare uses synthetic oil.

For the 2017 models, they have doubled the mileage between required oil changes in the maintenance schedule.

I don't think this is correct. What they did was moved the first oil change to 10K miles instead of 5K. It has been 10K intervals for many years now in general. And I think it would be nuts to run a new car 10K miles before first oil change. I try to do a first one at 15-2500 miles, regardless of who pays for it or if it is included in AudiCare or not.

Whatever you do, don't listen to the recommendations on the manufacturer who engineered the engine, and are held to a warranty.. they don't have a clue.

The oil companies appreciate your extra $$, though.. just in case they weren't screwing you enough at the pump

My point is it's not in the best interest of Audi from a warranty, reliability, or reputation standpoint to publish maintenance intervals which are detrimental to the engine. Synthetic oil production continues to make advances to extend usable life.. it's not the same formulation from 2006.. Same with motor production, which has evolved to exacting tolerances making the days of metal shavings and other production contaminants a thing of the past.

I change mine every 5K miles. Although oil quality and durability has come a long way, filter quality and durability has not.
