    Engine vibration at red light

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I'm experiencing light vibration when idle at red light. Not violently but something you have to pay close attention to notice it. Just wondering if this is normal with the 3.0 engine? My car is bone stock.

    Thanks!

My understanding is that it's normal.

I get the same thing. It's kinda intermittent though as some days are worse than others. I take it as a characteristic of an Audi. I've driven different models of S4, A4, Etc and they all vibrate at idle at some point.

It's normal, however I recently made a change to my plug gaps that eliminated this slightly lumpy idle quality just to experiment. My OEM plugs ranged from a .026-.030 gap when I removed them, I re-gapped them to .032 and it smoothed out the lumpy idle, like almost Toyota Camry smooth, but the engine response didn't seem as crisp to me, particularly up in the rev range. However, I installed new plugs and gapped them all at .028, idle quality seems slightly rougher than the .032, but not as rough as having a few gapped at .026 though. I used a .028 gap for performance reasons and at the recommendation based on other threads.

Completely normal. It's the "hot rod" in the engine coming out.

If you search for rough idle on the forum, you'll see a lot of threads about this. Common characteristic of the V6 engine, though there was one thread here where somebody pushed and pushed for a fix and something was done to address the idle (maybe the idle on his S4 was much worse than the norm). It's really noticeable if you give it enough gas to idle at 1,000RPM, it's really noticeable at that RPM.

Audi has a TSB, 24AS, which updates the ECU to address the rough idle to some degree, I think it was only for the early B8s as it was applied on 2010s like mine and 2011s on others. Also, if the secondary air intake is has enough buildup, that can also contribute to the rough idle but at the same time, the odd misfire here and there at low engine RPM as I experienced. After the SAI was cleaned things were much smoother (but idle still not the smoothest) and no more misfires.

I just noticed my car idling for the first time in my ownership. - it's weird.. i mean, on one hand it is so subtle and feels totally normal like any car would but it wasn't there for the first 20k . . . I just fear it could be the motor mounts going as i've heard a few folks have had that issue.. for now, my idle seems normal but i'm keeping a feel of it.

Normal. Through me for a concern though when very first test driving some low mileage ones during the shopping experience. Guess one of the very first cars I drove wasn't having any engine related issues but the sales guy didn't tell know much and I walked on that one. Wasn't until later that I read through threads and learned I wasn't nuts.

I only notice it if I have something on my passenger seat. For whatever reason that is where the most vibration seems to be.

I always assumed it was normal.

Where is the SAI. I might give this a try, the vibration is not that rough but I just can't stand it...

It is normal. My car had zero vibration when it was brand new; now it has a very subtle vibration a year later with 11.5k miles.

Can confirm intermittent vibration on a '16 with 3k miles. It actually feels like my late grandfathers old 67 chevelle ss to some degree. I like it.

Same here ... I took mine in for it but then I took another S4 out for a drive and there it was. Like others said it is very intermittent.. Sometimes I can go a day or two and its super smooth... Then the "old muscle car rock" comes back..

Same here, I've got a 2011 with 50k miles on it and it's noticeable when chilling at a light and my hand is on top of the wheel..

I also have a 2011 with 51k miles, I noticed this a week or two after I bought it last year, took in twice, they said it was normal. I am used to it now, it comes and goes.
