    TCC locking hard?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Only happens in traffic when its stop and go and the car has to shift from 2-3 at about 2k rpm. Jerks the car pretty hard. Its very annoying, esp b/c I'm now commuting 100 miles a day for the next few weeks. Get out of traffic and it shifts perfectly fine. Not sure why this is.

Also note, 155k on the car. Had the Trans fluid changed about 5-7k ago

Assuming this is a quattro automatic and whoever changed the fluid knew what they were doing, it sounds like valve body issues. The fact that it happens in stop and go traffic more-so than cruising may indicate heat makes the symptoms worse.

Personally I'd probably try to manually shift it in tip mode to avoid the symptom in the short term and consider replacing the valve body.

I'm assuming fluid change was done with correct fluid type and level is correct. If so, sounds like perhaps one of the dampers for the TCC apply circuit is deformed, or maybe the solenoid is sticky. Probably fixable, but would be involved. This guy did it:

Easier to swap the valve body. Or 5MT swap that pig like it's your job. ;)

Yes Quattro and yes its a Quattro. I can recreate it sometimes when I punch the gas in 2nd or 3rd gear trying to change lanes. The shop I took it to is reputable, owner rebuilt his B6 S4, and the problem was happening before the fluid swap.

It probably is heat related b/c it always happens after I've been cruising for 15-20 min, before my move I would get on the freeway within 10 min of driving and never had an issue while in the next 10 min of stop and go.

I put in the first post the fluid was changed about 5-7k miles ago by a reputable shop. Also, it was doing this before the fluid change.

I swear its happening in 2-3 but I'll double check today after work in Tip mode. Also, yeah I don't know how to drive MT, I would like to learn eventually of course

    No worries.

Now that I'm having to commute a longer distance and spent about 30-40 min in stop and go last night it got really annoying lol. Guess I may have to see if I can recreate the symptom in an empty parking lot so I can go by a trans shop to show them. I unfortunately have no place to attempt an intricate procedure like this.

Just a little tid bit, not sure if changes things, but this phenomenon happens less than a second after the shift so that's why I figure it was the TCC but I'll def determine after what gear shift it happens today b/c I'll be using Tip mode. When it happens its kind of a jerk that pushes the car forward a bit. Only my sub has been replaced, still need to do motor and trans mounts since I'm sure they are shot.

Def appears to be my TCC? I used tip, shifted to 2nd when it hit about 2K RPM it would kick and RPM would slightly drop, if I shifted to 3rd before then it would kick as I got near that range in 3rd gear but it was stronger I believe. Get off freeway and the kick is actually always there for the most part it's just less harsh when at a faster speed
