The turbocharger needs to be replaced. The error code stored in the engine has been cleared twice. looking at almost 4k in repairs. I am livid to say the least, and feel like I was sold a lemon... Please any suggestions!? :(

Where did you purchase it from?
    1. If it wasnt from a dealer with warranty, youre screwed and need to buy a used or new one. Most go with a k04 or similar.
    2. If you bought it from a dealer with warranty then youre gravy. Go get it replaced.

Also, theres no way in hell that its 4k for a bad turbo replacement.

Just going to come out and say what everyone else in the forum is thinking - should have done your homework. Sorry to hear the bad news so early in. Was that a dealer quote or Indy shop? How many miles? Audi extended the warranty on our cars for the turbocharger and engine to 70K and 80K respectively. Waste gate has been known to fail and depending on which CAEB engine you have you may burn oil as well. TONS of info in this forum. You weren't sold a lemon, just one of the unlucky few.

But if it's time for a new turbo I would go K04 and call it a day. Otherwise source out a K03 and have an Indy shop do the work - will be less than $4k.
    Good luck!

    $4,000 seems high to me....
that must be a dealer estimate. should be 1/3 that price anywhere else.

OP, there's no need to spend even half of that amount. You can get a used OEM turbo for less than $500. A brand new OEM unit is only ~ $1,000

It will cost you <$650 to swap that yourself with a used OEM unit. It sucks, but it happens. You can check the turbo tsb if you got a P0299. There's a diy for the turbo swap as well.

Thanks guys, so much more supportive than reddit lol.

    2 follow up questions:

First, the engine was rebuilt around this time last year, audi should have a warranty on that considering they were the ones that rebuilt it?

second, I brought it to the dealer a week after purchase when the check engine light came on, they said that there was an error code, but they cleared it..

"TURBO CHARGER ERROR CODE STORED IN ENGINE CONTROL MODULE. HAS BEEN CLEARED TWICE"

so wouldnt that be catching the dealer clearing the code?

Your codes will come back even after being cleared, if the issue hasn't been addressed; so if the issue remains, I would expect (and hope) that the code comes back. Do you know what the code is? If not, I would strongly suggest purchasing Carista and the appropriate OBDII dongle for your phone; wifi for iPhone, or bluetooth for droid. Otherwise, you can get a VAGCOM or borrow someone's close to you. Without that code we're shooting in the dark here, but this is a pretty common problem with our cars. Do you hear a metal on metal ticking noise when coasting? That's a pretty tell tale sign of a wastegate failure. Also, how many miles are on your car? The VIN specific TSB may still apply to your car.

If the work was done at an Audi dealership, the parts generally are covered under a 1 year or 12,000 mile warranty IIRC, but I am not certain if that is transferable after a sale. That being said, I would venture a guess that the "rebuild" was stage II of the oil consumption issue. If so, they generally are replacing pistons & rings, but occasionally replace the short block, sometimes the long block, and sometimes the turbo, so its possible that they left your turbo alone. I had stage II done around this time last year, but ended up swapping my turbo myself due to a P0299. Obviously, check with your local dealer first; provided you aren't tuned. Also, check out the two threads below.

This will help you change the turbo, if you undertake it yourself.

UPDATE Went back and talked to the dealer I purchased from, and 4 hours later we came to the resolution that he will be replacing the turbo at no cost to me :D
