Install Back Up Camera on 2016 Q5 Premium

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Last weekend, I installed the back up camera on my sister 2016 Q5 Premium. I took me many hours because of something we didn't know and the information on the webs wasn't clear. I decided to create a video from the beginning to end. The package I bought from China was actually very nice, except for the bad documentation. Truly a plug and play if they did it correctly.
    Some notes:
1- If you get something similar - Yellow power wire must be plug into the slot just above the RED power slot and tied to the RED power and the ACC fuse wire.

2- The original back-up camera will not come out unless the 2 lock tabs on both sides pressed in - I broke them trying pry the handle out.

3- Besides 7 screws inside the glove box + 2 under, there is another one on the side by the fuse box - all 8mm heads.

    Cheers,

    Louis

That's a great install video. Lots of dedication to have the concert radio and upgrade the camera. More than I've got.

    But that's a great mod!

One thing good about Audi cars is that we can retrofit practically everything. But forcing people to get Navigation package to get the camera for $4000 is very bad marketing IMO.

    Hello Eron,
Now show me how to hook up the front camera input with my PI 3 output then it will be a great device. My sister's sons wants to watch movies, youtube while they're in the car. They don't need front camera display.

    Cheers,

Great end up result Louis! The only mistake you did with yellow power wire, you've should connected it to the existing fuse wire and lock the circuit with the fuse. Your seller probably didn't provide you with full installation guide, otherwise you would have finished it in 2-3 hours. This guy from www.CarsGadget.com shows how to do it the right way, i got my unit from them, they are also in California, super fast response on the emails where i needed them and they provide super easy to follow installation guide and a lot of videos. After testing the system i really liked it so i ordered the front camera from them as well, if you wish to get front camera for your car, contact them, i recommend: [email protected]

I know, I've been talking to this seller since my sister bought the car late last year. Pulled the trigger for the summer project ($246 shipped). The documentation was horrible. I'm getting a WIFI MirrorLink for the front camera input as DVR instead of the camera itself, she wants to use the iPhone navigation on the screen and when she stream bluetooth, she can see the songs. I'll post the video when I got it hooked up, she's very happy with the back up camera as we speak. She said it's a little grainy at night, I think the 6.5" display low resolution is the culprit or the camera itself is NOT so high quality. Anyhow, the day time, the camera is beautiful.

    Cheers,

OK, I bought the Wifi Mirror Link and tested with my A8 D3, it will be perfect for Q5 without navigation and AMI.

Make sure to get the better camera for night vision, the one that came with mine is grainy, although the daytime is great.

Just finished installing my backup camera yesterday.

First, I'd like to thank Louis for creating the video. It helped a lot knowing where the clips are when you're trying to unsnap panels and covers!

Second, I'd like to thank Eron. I had a couple of questions and he answered them very quickly.

    Some notes from me:
-I have a newer hardware version then Louis, so no yellow wire was needed for my setup.
-Installing the module, the plug'n'play harnesses, etc was pretty straight forward. It literally is plug and play
-Biggest pain in the butt is running the video/power cable to the lift gate for the camera
-I would power on the car to test to ensure connections, etc were working
-this however triggered some lights on the dash when all was said and done
-checking the lights, it was the airbag, steering sensor, canbus, hazard switch (yes, they can detect that), and a couple of other things
-I reset these as I have access to a tool for that
-I'm not sure if Louis ran into this as he didn't mention it, but I also noticed in his video for example he leaves things plugged in like the hazard switch (I disconnected mine)

Again, big shot out to Louis for creating the video!

Did you buy from the same folks on eBay? Also how is the quality of your camera during day/night?

What's the issue with the yellow wire mentioned above? Newer versions no longer has the problem?

I bought directly from the seller. I wasn't even aware they had an ebay account until I saw more of this thread. The camera, and the module is very reasonable priced. DHL makes a killing on the shipping. But I received my unit in 2 or 3 days. It was fast and I wasn't expecting it that quickly. It actually took me a couple of months to install it.

The quality of the camera? Hard to say. It's definately not HD. But it's fine for backing up. At night time it's clear enough that you can see things. It's not infrared, but it's low light and take advantage of the light coming from your tail/brake lights and reverse lights. So no complaints thus far. I need to find an OE setup to compare to. But as far as I can remember compared to BMW setups, it seems on par. Keep in mind, this is way cheaper then the OEM option where they basically force you buy a package before you can get the reverse camera.

Apparently Louis' setup required him to power the yellow wire (as well as the red). On my version (newer hardware version) it was not required. Just a red ACC wire (no need for constant 12v power since it's only needed when the car is on)

Touaregs have a touch screen. Someone should make a drop in screen with this option as well as screen sharing. I would think that would be a hot seller.

    Cheers,

    Louis

This is what worries me is triggering all the sensors. I tried to put in an aftermarket Gps and ur knocked out my power steering and had to tea it to dealer to get reset.
