    Chasing oil leaks

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm planning on chasing down a multitude of little oil leaks on my AEB 1.8T 99.5. Basically this means doing all the gaskets, seals, hoses, etc that are in any way oil related provided I can get to them. With regards to the ones under the intake manifold, would it make my live a lot easier if I simply pull the intake? Any real gotchas I need to look out for if I do pull it? Thanks for any feedback.

Ehem Check the oil sending unit, crank breather hose, and the gasket on the oil housing, they all leak around the same time. and its a lot. Also Just take out the washer fluid tank and move the antifreeze bottle, after that u have a basket ball sized area to work with

Just delt with this same issue with my 99 1.8 AEB, turned out after the car runs for a bit the sending unit would spit oil very quickly run down the side of the cooler and made it look like the cooler was leaking, I replaced several different things because i couldnt "SEE" a leak

Remember to change your blinker fluid it may go bad on you!

Also if u take off the intake, U will probably have to do a TBA with VCDS

Thanks. I'll have to see if that will give me the room I need. I plan on getting the PCV stuff done while I'm down there as well as the oil filter adapter seals and gaskets. I'll add the sender to that list.

I've taken my intake off multiple times TB as well and I've never did a TBA. Is this unusual, dose it matter that mine is a 97 AEB, or am I missing something?

not super sure, But the TBA has a chance to malfunction when its unplugged from the ECU, Basically the Car forgets its a car.

I'm AWM and my IM has been off plenty of times without ever doing a TBA. you need to take the coolant crossover pipe off to get the IM off of the two studs that it uses. I did it without taking the pope off and cracked the plastic coolant flange on the back of the head. Up to you what you wanna do. Hope with helped.

I'm about to do oil leaks as well my motor is coming out. Makes it so much easier but in your case I imagine you are not pulling the motor.

I'd prefer pulling the engine, but don't want the extended downtime. This is the kid's car and I really don't want them driving mine if I can help it.
