    Supercharger Pulley Removal Help

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys

So I'm the idiot that decided not to buy a proper tool for removing the pulley. I'm currently in service position, attempting to pull this off. It's not budging. At this point the stock pulley is ruined, but I'm not too concerned about that... I just want to be able to get it off and get the new one on. Can anyone offer advice for getting this pulley off without the specific pulley removal tool?

    Thanks

    Adam

Could you fit an AutoZone rental 3-claw pulley puller in there?

Go get a pulley tool, Audi specific or not. That thing is not going to come off otherwise.

Edit...I see you have a tool, can you use a plate or washer?

I could... What should I use to heat it? Don't like the idea of blasting a little propane torch towards the engine tho

Take pulley to autoparts store and see what type of pulley removers they have. A horseshoe style would work.

I used a three prong pulley as well. Yes, I destroyed my pulley too. I ended up taking of the SC out of the engine bay, and used an impact driver on the tool. It eventually came off. Run it till the impact driver no longer moves it any and go get a drink. Leaving it under tension like that will do wonders. I had to go back at it three times. On the third time, it just came off like nothing. Here's my pulley afterwards.

In situations like this, I would invest in the actual pulley removal tool or have a shop that has one do it. You don't want to damage the shaft or any other part of the supercharger or else you are really screwed. When you get to the point of stage 2 and upgrading that pulley, just do it right the first time and save the headaches.

I'm worried now that the proper tool won't even fit, due to the inward warping of the back pulley wall. Does the apr or awe have any wiggle room on the collars, or is it a very snug fit?

I had my shop do it but they heated it with a torch for a few mins and it seemed to do the trick

do you have an air cut off wheel. Cut the pulley and if you mark the S/C shaft a little bit it will be fine. Or cut it down close to the shaft and take a chisel and hit it and it will crack the rest of the way. Then it will come right off.

I guess this post shows get the correct tool or bust lol.

I know this doesn't help any, but how did you think you were going to get the stock pulley off?

A torch on the pulley isn't going to hurt anything and the car isn't going to explode...that's your cheapest/easiest solution at this point to remove it and get the car running.

Not sure if a torch would actually help to get it off as you are heating the shaft also and that will also expand leaving you in the same place. Best thing to do is get the correct tool for the job before something else gets f'd.

I would think a torch would help if you just keep it on the perimiter and be careful not to overheat everything.

Yeah, it might come down to needing to heat it. But I think I still need a better tool for the job.

    Supercharger Pulley Removal Help

I've learned a valuable lesson in the last few days. Don't start a job until you have all the proper tools required to complete said job.

Shout out to Zach at EuroSportTuning in Oakville for rushing me the APR pulley removal kit! And cheers to everyone that messaged me to help. What a great community!

Currently waiting for the new pulley to finish heating, so still half the job to go! Icing the shaft, heating pulley to 375x1hour and then 400 for about 20 minutes. Also going to get a can of some compressed air to help with cooling the shaft.
