I started my car. It rumbled and shook the shut off. tried to restart and it started on but shook and the check engine light came on the i heard the loud tapping that sounds like valve tapping. Already checked cam follower and hpfp and they are fine.

Check your HPFP cam follower, if thats ok, you need to check the cam timing chain and tensioner at the rear of the engine behind the vacuum pump.

Scan for codes since you have a CEL. If your CF/HPFP are fine, it's likely your cam chain tensioner.

Unfortunately my ebay cable won't read the engine codes for my B7 so I am unable to scan for codes.

judging by the way it's idling, I don't think it's a valve... I don't know what it is, but it doesn't sound like a valve at all. i'll put my money on the rear cam chain tensioner.. also, being inside the garage only makes the sound worse than what it actually may be.

    1) Get your codes read by a real cable/VCDS.

    2) Probably cam chain tensioner.
