    Audio Upgrade

This past January I brought my car in to a local audio guy to have a touch screen stereo put in. I believe its the pioneer 2700bs. Anyway after having it installed I noticed at high volumes it cuts out. I called them back and they said it was due to the stock speakers not being able to handle that much power...so I recently put a set of infinity speakers in the front and to no avail they still do the same thing. The sound quality has definitely gone up though. So on Saturday I returned to the installer and another person told me that when the speaker cuts out at high volume like that it is actually a safety feature so you won't blow your speaker and to resolve the issue I'll need a new amp. I'm just wondering if this seems right? I would have thought twice about an upgrade because I never had this issue with the stock system at higher volumes...sound would not be as clear but now the sound just cuts out. Should I try a new upgraded amplifier or would a used bose amplifier be sufficient for my car. I had a symphony stereo in the car before all this. I usually do all the work myself when it comes to my car because I recently juat changed careers but I was an auto technician before this. I have no experience with audio though so this is all new to me. Any advice or suggestions on an upgraded amp would be great. I'm not looking for a system to wake up the neighborhood but just something that when I'm driving down the highway with the windows open it can be loud enough to not be drowned out. Thanks!

The audio cut out you described is usually caused by an amp that cannot put out enough power at the volume level selected, so the amp chops the power to the speakers at the loudest parts of the audio signal. Adding the Infinity speakers is a good sound quality choice, but those speakers are 2 Ohm impedance and will pull more power from the amp at the same volume level as the stock speakers. An amp with more power capability and 2 Ohm stable is required to fix the amp output power chops occuring. The audio shop where you purchased the head unit should be able to advise you about the best amp for your upgrade.

Those speakers will be 4 Ohm. component speakers, 2 & 3 way speakers will be 4 Ohm while sub woofers are available in various coil configurations so I doubt impedance is an issue.

They are 2 Ohm speakers. They are infinity 6032cf speakers. I'll be honest I bought the pair of speakers from crutchfield because they had good reviews and they were reasonable. Didn't really research impedance and maybe that is my issue.

Some amps that are designed to drive 4 Ohm loads are not 2 Ohm stable since the amp must deliver more power driving a 2 Ohm load especially during peak transients of the Audio signal. Most automotive speakers are 4 Ohms impedance. The 2 Ohm Infinity speakers are a good choice and is what I use. A 2 Ohm capable amp with more power will sound better too.
