I didn't like the [eBay] short shifter on my last B5/A4.

Really liked the combo BasedDrifter had on his car though.

I had the eBay short shifter with JHM linkage and delrin stabilizer bushing. I just upgraded to the JHM shifter and wonder why I didn't drop the coin years ago, beyond worth it. If you think it felt good before Memo, you should try it now.

Psa- the ebay short shifter is always that price dispite what others say I've never seen it above 45bucks. Ill be going jhm also no point spending money for a slight upgrade. And yes I've had the same blue ebay shifter before.

search for the shifter on ebay, one seller is cheap and the rest are 70ish+.

$30 test to save you hundreds...

Probably the best $30 you could spend on the car that yields such a drastic, awesome change.

I have the eBay SS with the JHM solid linkage and Delrin bushing. I've had the tighten my solid linkage twice now. I'm kinda annoyed about that but everything feels solid with this set up. I wish the ball seat had tighter clearances. That's the only reason I would buy the JHM SS. I may design something in autocad for my eBay SS so that it fits more snug in the shifter base.

I did the zip tie trick but that lasted only a few months before loosened up. And I like playing on my CAD and it will honestly cost me less then 20$ to make.

its all about the material, the audi part is nylon with PTFE so it is natually slick. Nothing will compare to that material.

I scored an ebay shifter at PnP. Threw it in, and took it out the same day. I just sold it for $10. That was with a stock ball too.

One of these days I'll get the JHM package.

Why couldn't I make something that compares to their materials? JHM did it with metal? I just want to make a cage that fits snugger around the ball on the shifter so it doesn't move around nearly as much in there. Get rid of the rubber and make it nice and solid.

if you don't use the right material the lube likes you get resistance. Happened with the 3d printed part made out of abs. Just trying to share my experience. changing out the rubber wont really change much, just get the new socket. and I had that post say "besides ball bearings obviously." before I edited it. Did you even read the linked thread above? Seems like you didnt.

I skimmed thru it looking for a link for the new cage. I'll read it later tonight after work. And thanks for letting me know about the abs. I might try to have it machined out of billet. I'm still gunna make something up. Well see.

No problem buddy, That sounds pretty cool, the thing about billet would be you need the 'give' of the soft materials to get the ball in the socket, but once its in there it should work well, Make it bigger so you don't have to use the rubber spacers, just the metal one and circlip. Make sure its a softer material then the ball though so you don't have to get another short shifter. Keep us updated, I want one if it works out.

I'll just make the cage out of two pieces so it's as snug as possible. I'll make something up this week. I work 13 hours a day so playing on cad is low on the list of priorities unfortunately. I'll get it done tho.

Pretty sure the "late" cage is available separately. For whatever reason it's not listed in the catalog for the B5. But if you snoop around other models, you can find "the good stuff".

NOTE: I am not an Audi parts guy. I just diddle around in ETKA when I should be doing actual work. I recommend you consult your Audi dealer parts professional before plunking down 60 bucks on this piece of plastic. They will probably be clueless about this part number and how it applies to your A4 shifter woes. But at least they have 4 rings on their name tag.

Thanks to both of you. It's hard to mow grass and look up part numbers. I'll work on the part tonight. I have to get dimensions on the ball and the cage area next.
