Roof antenna - what is it for? how to change

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Found my roof antenna broken off entirely.
Not just the must, but part of the mount, too.

Radio appears to work just as before.

What is the antenna for? Digital radio?

Any good DIY instructions how to install new antenna base, including the (likely) need to drop the rear/side of the headliner?

I haven't done it before but I would start with the top rear headliner piece just inside the hatch opening and possibly the D pillar pieces (maybe just one side will get you enough room?). The piece just in front of the hatch opening is held only by clips and you can pry it straight down and it pops off. Don't stress the piece too much because the plastic that give it it's form can crease. To remove the D pillar pieces, or at least the rear side of them to get some play in the headliner, there is a torx where the dog net gets held when it's extended and then where the cargo cover gets extended. After that they should unclip as well. I think there's just a nut holding the antenna base on. But I've never removed it before.

The mast is likely AM reception. There are diversity antennas in both rear 3/4 windows.

Thanks for the tip. AM is working.
Still would like DIYwith photos. As you stated: those darn clips and plastic pieces break easily. Good to KNOW where the tabs are and how they pull out.
I have a tendency to break plastic and retainers, and bent headliner.

Nevermind. Took pics but my photobucket won't load. It's free, but photobucket sucks so much.

    I'll try again later.
