    Brake Squeal Delete Mod

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I noticed that after a long day of trying to keep up with my friends' RS5 on backroads and some highway driving, my brakes were squealing tremendously. What is a cheap way of eliminating this? I know a little about BBK, Akebono pads, etc, but with the stock setup I'd like to know what works best.

Its the stock break compound, you can't do anything about it. They stop squealing once they heat up a bit, so do a couple of hard break when cold. Other than that, there is nothing you can do except move to warmer climates lol

If you're just looking to eliminate brake squeal, I'd say replacing the front pads (and rears if you don't like to mix and match) first are your best option.

I would make sure you still have some brake pad left. Street pads are quiet when cold and will fade when they get hot, track pads squeal when cold but control the fade under hard driving.

The problem only occurs when the brakes are hot, and I had them squeal on me in 90 degree weather haha.

Did you do the install yourself? On stock calipers/rotors?

You could always try re-greasing them.

You need to use high temp lube and lube the parts of the brake caliper that touch the pad, pad ears and the sliding parts of the caliper where it's obvious metal sliding on metal. Less lube = better.

But at that point, you're disassembling the pads and calipers to the point you could put in new pads so IMO why stop there. Just toss in the Akebono's and enjoy dust/squeak free driving.

So I put the grease on the rotors, just like you guys recommended. Looks like I'll be needing a new car...
I think I'll just get the Akebono pads and call it a day.

Definitely get the Akebonos. Check out Amazon and you can get them much cheaper than anywhere else. I bought the fronts and rears separately a month and change ago and ended up spending like $135, total. Took a few hours to do the install, just taking my time, and since then I've had no squeal, better braking linearity, and absolutely no dust. I literally didn't wash my car for almost 3 weeks, and the wheels still looked spotless. With the stock pads I had to clean my wheels at least every 4-5 days, since they'd get dirty so quickly.

Akebonos are the way to go:

    Fronts: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009AA17TO - $82
    Rears: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007FF3P9Q - $50

I think AMZ in post #8 was referring to cleaning and re-greasing the caliper slide pins and the backing plates of the brake pads.

If it's squealing after some aggressive driving, it sounds as though you could have gotten the pads hot enough to glaze the surface. When this happens the pad surface texture changes and it can cause excessive squealing. You can remove the pads and inspect them, see if the pad surface has a sheen to them. If the pads still have a decent amount of life left take some sandpaper and sand the pad surfaces and both sides of the rotor faces. The sanding should remove the glazed surfaces and restore the pads and rotors.

Also, the squeal everyone is referring to happens during the colder months when using OEM pads. It's a squeal that occurs when lightly applying brake pedal pressure but goes away once the brakes become fairly warm. I don't think you are suffering from these symptoms.

    Good luck OP.
