TL;DR: Bought an Allroad (first C5), small origin story, some pics, next steps.

Normally on the B7 forum due to owning a 2007 2.0T quattro tip. My interest in C5s came when my brother bought an 02 llroad 6MT a few years ago. Fast forward to the last 2 weeks. Saw two allroads I was interested in -- a 4.2 in Delaware (which I just missed), and one up in NJ that had been around for a few months. A 2003 Allroad 2.7T 6MT base model with just under 148k on the odo, and priced well. Too well. This particular car had been advertised for a couple months, and looks like it had been sitting a little bit longer. So armed with our knowledge of our cars, we decided to drive up--that's what 4-day weekends are for, right!?

Did the cursory exterior walkaround, and mostly found benign items -- a few rock chips, fogged headlight, oxidized fender flare, and broken rear wiper. The tires were the most concerning of those, as not a single one matched! One even looked dry-rotted too.

Unlocked the door manually and immediately noticed no lights--the battery in both the fob and car were COMPLETELY dead. I mean, not an ounce of power. However, I did the cloth seats in the base model, along with the slight differences, such as door cards, from my brother's 02. Normal worn away buttons and switches. Passenger side visor was detached in the trunk. Edges of the dash seem to pop up a bit. And that god awful purple tint.

Pop the hood. Oh crap. Rain tray was full of water, up to about 2/3s the way up the battery. All the drains were clogged with crap. Engine covers and rain tray cover were completely missing, and the fan has one broken blade. Dried oil covered most of the sides of the engine in various places. Was told the valve cover gasket was replaced, but I'm skeptical of that. Surprisingly, connected the jump box and she started right up. And ran pretty quietly too!

Finally can check out the goodies. Instrument cluster was very difficult to read, and virtually disappeared due to the heat (>80 F); it's visible when it is cooler. Speaking of cool, the air conditioning works fantastically! Additionally, the air suspension is in top shape as well--no leaking bags and immediately responsive to level changes.

Test drive: About to pull onto the street and it died. After jumping it again and going down the road, the dash lights lit up like Christmas. Ah crap, I thought. And a shake in the car at ~40 mph. After returning and shutting off, I noticed a small puddle of oil underneath (appeared to be coming from the oil pan gasket, but not 100% sure). The dealer replaced the battery with a new one, and we test drove the car again. Some negotiating time later, I wound up with ~35% off the asking price.

On the 2 hour drive home, had to pull off due to the oil level light coming on. All the other dash lights were coming on like the test drive as well. Oil level checked out. Read all the codes with VCDS (a LOT--all electrically related), cleared them, and resumed driving home. Warning lights GONE (except washer fluid and brake pad sensor). Car started driving great, and getting stronger the whole drive home!

Here are a few of the pics captured:

    Driving home:

    Outside:

    Engine:

And of course, some beer to celebrate!

So, my next steps (not in order) are to do the following:

    1. Degrease/wash the engine to both clean it and figure out where that oil leak is coming from.
    2. Fix said oil leak.
    3. Clean out the rain tray completely.
    4. Clean up all the corroded bolts, etc, in the rain tray area.
    5. Change brake pads/discs.
    6. Replace fluids (brakes+slave cylinder, engine oil, gear oil, rear diff, blinker fluid).
    7. Obtain engine and rain tray covers.
    8. Replace instrument cluster (or just the display).
    9. Replace worn switches.
    10. Replace all tires (or get wheel/tire combo I like).
    11. Remove cheap purple tint and get real tint.
    12. Keep her stock while I think about mods and fix whatever else comes up.

Look forward to getting along with everyone!

Thanks! That's what the TL;DR was for. So far so good! About to wash down the engine! Also already picked up the a rain tray, and probably the cluster tomorrow. Looking forward to getting this unicorn back on track!

Got a couple goodies in today!

Hoping to test this baby out today to replace my fading display. My brother thinks he has the right tool to code it over to my car; if not, I'll see about swapping over the center DIS, if it's good.

Got a pair of 17Zs out of an 04 Touareg 3.2. Going to have these blasted to clean them up before coloring them.

I've done an 18Z conversion in my B7, so I am familiar with the process. Gotta order the correct mounting hardware, Merc discs, and pads, and will probably do that within the next couple weeks.

Haha, that's hilarious, I'm going to use that in the future. In my defense I usually read it all :)

Awesome! You're gonna love the BBK! And Vag Commander is what you want to code the clusters.

That's what I've read, and my brother says he has it in storage somewhere. So hoping he gets that out this weekend. I've read I can use my VCDS cable, so hoping that's the case as well.

In the meantime, more goodies arrived! (sorry for the low res pics)

    "TL;DR"
We used to say "CN" on the NASIOC Forum for "Cliff Notes." Must be getting old.
Congrats on the Allroad. You seem to have obtained a car that will take some work but a great deal. I am amazed at how many people are selling these (Allroads) for dirt cheap down my way, VA. I thought about getting one as a parts car, saw a 6MT for $2800 nearby. Just bought my wife an '04 with 118k, 6MT, Audi/Porsche mechanics wife owned. There are a few things wrong. The DIS is dead/dim and it drives me nuts. I am researching this now and may attempt the solder myself but I have the pod with the lockout from '04....

    Best of luck

Cliff Notes takes me back to when I was a student using "Cliff's Notes". And the teachers always knew!

Congrats on the '04! Sounds like at least something was maintained on that car. The DIS, well, sometimes those are a crapshoot. I've read of people having so many issues on their B7s, for instance, but outside of me doing a couple dumb things, it's been relatively hassle-free.

And thanks. The work I'm setting up to do now is mostly for my own peace of mind. While I could live with the oil leak for a while, I have absolutely NO idea when the timing belt was done, so that's imperative. And since the car is not enclosed from the elements, I'm looking for a couple days of less-than-intense sun and no rain. Just trying to take it one day at a time. Oh, and my latest set of pickups!

I also picked up a set of a A6 projector fog lights from a wrecked car that I want to see if I can retrofit into the allroad housing (I'm aware they are different). In case I screw up, EuropaParts has/had the allroad fogs for $20 apiece (Vaico) so I snagged a pair. Also snagged some more cleaning things, but that has not arrived yet because they won't ship the liquids USPS, so FedEx SmartPost took it from NJ to PA to hand it to another carrier, who will then have to reenter NJ to deliver it.

Finally that EuropaParts order came through!

Includes two fogs (Valeo) that come with bulbs, 034 snub mount, coolant temp sensor (green), Liqui-Moly Radiator Cleaner, Fuel Injection Cleaner, Valve Clean, Engine Flush, and Anti-Friction Engine Treatment. I'm entirely too excited for this weekend, especially after seeing this:

Finally got some progress done. She's going to be a doozy! Got a late start due to having to run a few errands.

First step was to remove the center caps. OH MY GOD. WHO HOT GLUES THE CENTER CAPS?! And this, should give you a trend for the rest of the car...

First look at the control arms. Driver side uppers were replaced, but passenger side needs replacing. Uppers are below, but I'm going to be safe than sorry and do the lowers too.

With the bumper off, it was apparent that the intercooler wasn't as efficient as it could be. Hmmm...

Drained the radiator. I'm not sure if I've ever seen coolant so fithy! I'm hoping I can get this rustiness out of it with the Lubri-Moly Radiator Flush

    Nessie, is that you?!

Dried oil caked up on the timing cover. There is dried oil caked up EVERYWHERE on the front. I mean EVERYWHERE! Brake Clean was insufficient. I may end up power washing the whole thing if that doesn't work.

Tomorrow is continuing with this trial. Crossing my fingers on what I reveal.

I could have just continued and replaced the timing belt, but there's no point. Btw, the timing belt has been recently replaced--the belt on there is practically brand new. But whomever performed the activity didn't follow through with all the other items.

But lots of caked up, dried up oil. The highest point I can see any leakage looks around the power steering. I'm going to power wash this sometime soon, and see what I am looking at. Pulled out the ignition coils and there is oil in every cylinder. Cylinder 4 was very little, but 5-6 completely covered the spark plug. Cylinders 1-3 were about half as full as 5-6. Hoses are swollen on their ends.

I'm really leaning towards pulling the engine, replacing all the hoses, seals, gaskets, etc. Just to do it right. And if I am pulling the engine, I think I'll be looking into a build. /End.

Wow, she's rough around the edges! Don't power wash the bay, it doesn't really like that and couldn't haunt you down the line. Just soak the timing covers in some heavy grease cutter.

These motors are tough. I'm sure she'll respond positively to the TLC.

    Thanks!

It's one of those things that is frustrating, like "C'mon! How hard is it to just do basic maintenance, people?!?"

Since then, I think I'm set on removing the engine to ensure I don't miss anything. Having a 360 degree view will definitely give me peace of mind, and I can address any items that are currently hiding. The subframe (and probably more) is completely covered with semi-dry oil/grease. But I'll try to be gentle with the engine and soak on some degreaser. Looks like what I had hoped to a be a few weekends is now going to be a few months.

Hoping to get a lot done over the July 4 holiday, such as getting the car enclosed, engine removed, and an assessment of where I stand. Probably should expect a small build thread in the October-November timeframe.
