In the process of ordering parts for this new project. Car has 215k miles on it and the guy I bought it off of said the trans surges. Any ideas on how I could fix this without replacing the transmission?

Wrong car to own then. Find another tip then. Likely your valve body is biting the dust or your torque converter, which is also a common issue

The surging is more likely a vacuum leak, issues these transmissions have are solenoids (shuddering, failure to engage gears) and torque converter.
the B5 S4 is like the mafia... there is only one way out!
