    B5 S4 restore, NEED HELP!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
recently purchased a 2000 S4, 2.7L bi-turbo. currently drive a 98' A4 quattro 2.8L and know my way around it decently but have noticed that the parts i need for the S4 are not the same as my A4. was wondering if you guys could help me out with telling me what parts i can nab off of an A4 quattro and what parts i will have to buy off an S4. so far i know that it will need a core support, radiator, ac condenser and the fan that sits on top of the condenser as well. Is the core support in an S4 the same as the V6 model b5 A4's? will an A4 radiator work on the S4? any help is appreciated. also, how do i attach an image? first time on the forum.

A good friend just tried a v6 a4 core support and said it didn't fit right. Surely someone here can confirm or deny.

Ummm....no. All B5 V6 core supports are the same.

OP, you can pretty much grab all the body panels, front/rear control arms, front/rear subframes etc, from a 2.8 A4. Pretty much the same on the surface and most of the underside.

EDIT: You can use most of that stuff listed from a 2.8 A4. The rad will not work, because reasons

Like I said, someone here can confirm or deny.

I was under the understanding to use an a4 core support you'd have to trim for the radiator, parts of the sides, and use the a4 snub mount cage.

    Soooo, no. Not the same

No idea. Best to find a good used one. Look on ECS and compare the auto A4 and S4 rads.

Maybe for a 1.8T core support as that shit is all different. As for the snub cages, the 2.8 and 2.7T snub cages are the same. The only different one is the 1.8T

    Ok I can help here.

So the core support from a 2.8 B5 will not work on the 2.7tt - Reason, intercoolors. I have both, so I can compare them for you when I get a minute.

If you need a front end for the S4, you will have to buy the core, rad, aux fan and inter-cooler brackets. Reuse the S4 wire harness to keep things simple. The headlights and hood latch should be the same. So you can reuse those. Also the bumper shocks mounts are different, but the side hooks are the same.

Not sure if the part will fit? Use ECS or similar sites to find part numbers and compare.

There are a lot of things that can be swapped, but the front end is not one of them.

the picture for the radiators is the exact same for both the A4 and the S4, difference is price, the A4 radiator being around 200 and the S4 being almost 400. doesnt make much sense...

looks like ill be dumping some big bucks into it then. there are very very few S4's in ohio so finding used parts is next to impossible.

IIRC, the a4 cage mounts with only 3 bolts. There are multiple threads on the trimming needed to use the v6 a4 core support

core supports are different for sure, you can make a 2.8 radiator fit, I had to since an s4 rad is crazy expensive compared to an a4 one, you just have to trim a piece of the rubber that the pegs of the rad fit in in the core support. pretty sure the condenser is the same as an s4 as well, and you don't technically need the pusher fan in front of the condenser either, Canadian spec s4s never came with them.

Can you elaborate on the cutting to fit? You had to modify the footing on the core support or something on the radiator itself? It would be nice to not have to shell out so much for a new one.

Agreed. Anything for the S4 is way overpriced. Just ordered a radiator that the manufacturer said would fit, I will let everyone know if it does

the pegs on the 2.8 radiator are about 5/8 an inch closer together than the s4 rad so they don't fit in the round rubber pieces in the core support, I cut 3/8" into the side on each of the rubber pieces so that the radiator fit in there. Heres a pic of what I did, more cutting than you have room in the rubber may be necessary so I just ground one or both sides of the core support with a dremel sanding drum too.

I'm a real amateur when it comes to things like this, my first car was a Dodge Ram and that's where I learned how to work on cars, extremely different from an Audi obviously. Here is what I bought: http://m.ebay.com/itm/New-Radiator-F...=1409991859006 Will it fit?

My lack of experience is comical, but that's why I turned to this forum. My first time working on anything remotely serious on an Audi. All I've had to do to my daily is replace some cv shafts and the rest has been paint and sound system.

I don't know if you are near cleveland area but I am in Buffalo, NY and have an automatic and manual s4 parts cars if you still need those front end parts. Might be meeting a fellow Ohio member shortly in Erie, PA pretty soon too. PM me if you still need parts
