Catch Can causing valve cover gasket leak

    Hey all,

I recently installed a CTS Turbo catch can in my B7 A4. The PCV system was functioning normally, but I'm getting ready to flash a JHM stage 1 tune and wanted to replace all worn/failure-prone parts beforehand. I hooked up the can as per the instructions and everything seemed to be fine, but after about 2 days of driving, I noticed some residue from a small oil leak. It looked to me like it was coming from the valve cover gasket. I removed the catch can and went back to stock, and was able to take it into the dealership since I had a bit of warranty time left. They confirmed that it was in fact the valve cover gasket that was the source of the leak and replaced it under warranty.

Now that the gasket has been replaced, I'm hesitant to reinstall the catch can if I'm going to have another issue with excessive crankcase pressure. I did notice that with the catch can installed and the car running at idle, if I loosened the oil filler cap it would bounce around. I was under the impression that it should be under light vacuum.

I realize that PCV questions have been covered on here ad nauseam, but I haven't come across anything specifically related to blowing out a valve cover gasket. It seems like a good amount of people are running catch cans without any issues, so I wanted to get some feedback before deciding how to approach this situation.

    Thanks in advance,

    Will

I didn't take any photos of the catch can installed, but it was hooked up in the exact same way as in these instructions from CTS Turbo: http://www.ctsturbo.com/cart/CTS%20C...tions%20RE.pdf

I also had this same problem in my old car, and need to part ways with my current stock PCV. I'd also like to see what others say, but I am going to try a vented CC to bleed off the excess pressure.

Was there anything in the catch can? Anything that impedes flow through the PCV system could increase crank case pressure and result in a VC leak.

I changed my crankcase breather tubes yesterday, the one that goes to the bottom was 3/4 full of dry carbon deposits. Check that also.

The catch can seemed to be working, I emptied the same nasty looking liquid that I've seen in a few other CC posts

I'll have to check the crankcase breather tubes as well. I'm wondering if running the can without the dipstick installed would help relieve some of the pressure.
