Air conditioning just started making a crazy loud humming sound???

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So we finally started getting some hot days this weekend up in Toronto and when I turned on AC it sounded like I was sitting behind a pair of refrigerators!
There was a loud humming/droning sound coming from the dash and it's not really blowing cold air.
Then last night I was driving with the climate control on and it was quiet (but it was much cooler).

Today, same thing. Humming is back.

    Has this happened to anyone?

    No ideas guys? Blower? Condenser?

Small update. It does seem to be blowing good cold air.

And the humming sound gets louder the higher the fan is running. I manually took it down to 6 (instead of 12) and it was not very loud at all.

Does it do it on heat? Sounds like something in the fan like a leaf.

If it's only on cool I have no idea but if it does it on heat too maybe a bad bearing in the fan? I've had cars that happened to before.

There's tsb for some blower motor. If I remember, one of the fins on it breaks and makes that raquet. Search for AC TSB maybe? I just don't remember the details but I'm pretty confident I remember the thread about loud humming noises from the ac.
I'd just take it in and tell them there's some tsb for my ac noises.
Wish I could be more helpful.

There may be a TSB but I'm well out of warranty (for the years not the KMS).

Picked up a Behr Blower Motor from my local Audi repair shop (Almost Racing) for $200 less than what the dealer was charging.
    And it's OEM quality.

Installing it tonight or some time this weekend.

Hey my audi is making the same noise when its really hott out and i turn the ac on. It gets louder the higher i put the fan and the air seems to take longer to get cool. But today when i turned my ac on it made a crazy loud noise and then stopped working. No air comes out the vents at all but you can hear the ac turn on when i press the buttons. I have no idea what to do .... Did you install the new blower motor? Did it help??

Change the fan/blower that's in your dash out. It's gone bad, that's all. It will require removal of the glovebox to get the unit out, but it's pretty straight forward. Look online for a few basic videos on how to do it. It's not that hard.

    Most likely Swank is correct.

In my case I bought the fan blower but ended up returning it.
Turns out a kleenex got sucked into the fan and that was the cause of the loud humming sound!
Took everything apart, saw the kleenex, removed it and it all went back to normal.

A couple of days ago, my fan is making similar loud noise and gets louder at higher fan speed. The AC cold air works fine and the noise is still there when AC is off, so it's only fan related. I'm on Stage II tune, so don't want to visit the dealer yet. I'm at 20K miles and waiting for my 25K Audicare service before flashing back to stock and bringing it in. I'm hoping to live with the loud noise until then, unless there is bigger problem if I wait it out.

This is interested. Maybe I have the same issue. Did you just remove the glove box to get to the fan blower? When I opened my hood, I can tell the noise is coming from the passenger side.

Is it a loud humming noise? R remove the glove box and it's right behind

Mine just started doing this a week or two ago. I plan to take it to the dealer later this week or early next as I am still under warranty. I'll let you know what I find out.

Took my car in to the dealer today and they ended up replacing the blower motor - no questions asked (I'm still under warranty). Problem solved - nice and quiet now.

Thanks for the update! I need to do the same, but gotta find time to flash back to stock tune first...
