So my buddy got a Golf R with stage 1 tune and we both used launch control hes about a car ahead of me. My S4 is stock btw

I drove his car and I can't believe how nimble and sporty the Golf R is! Such a nice car.

Yeah, can't say I'm surprised. Tuned, he's putting now more power than you in stock form and he weighs a lot less. With everything being turbo charged these days I can no longer be the outside lane bully cause you just never know. You could seriously end up with a hurt ego, lol.

I'd agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.

Yup I would have bought a golf R if I could have found one with what I wanted in my time frame but I am happy with the S4 for sure. I also had a friendly encounter with one and I think it was tuned and he pulled on me no matter the gear or speed (i'm stock).

I have a buddy who runs with me at the track in his '15 Golf R APR stage 1 + intake, he can run 11.9x@113mph on 93 pump. So yes, it'll give a stock, stage 1, or even some stage II's a run for their money from a dig.

Yea I mean stock for stock on paper the R is 40HP or so down but 600+ pounds lighter and comes with a DSG + AWD also.

I actually wanted a Golf R, but VW lost me with their roll-out process so I bought an S4.

The main downside (esp manual) with the R seems to be turbo lag; it is a fast little car, but it can get caught flatfooted.

    ^ this

Had a Golf VI R and hated the lag. Drove the new S3 and it was still too laggy. Bought the S4 and have been happy ever since.

After driving the S3 I agree that it can get caught flat footed at lower speed rolls as other have noted, but it seems to pull harder to redline than the stock S4. Both cars are fun but the low to mid range immediate power of the S4 helps in normal daily driving I find.

from a dig it's a drivers race as to who can hook up in the first 60ft. one of the reasons I love the S4 especially with a tune is that around town there's not much that put a hurt on us if the launch is done right. two-pedal fun at it's finest. The best is when you get a Vette or a Camaro SS or like at a light next to you. They roll out strong as heck but unless you want to risk a serious offense getting caught on the highway, we can hold our own without much issue :)

Props to the VW R crew though. We're seriously looking at one for the wife to replace the Urban Assault Van.

My wife and I just bought a Golf R to replace her R32 and it is a phenomenal car. The mid-range power is really really good and it's a great highway cruiser too. Very similar to my S4 in certain regards like being a very fast car that is very easy to drive normally. We test drove an S3 before we bought it and my wife hated the dash layout with the pop up nav screen and the backseat felt a bit cramped too for a normal height individual. All in all, we are very happy with the purchase and the fact that a bunch of the S3 go fast parts for much cheaper with better seats and technology too.

Love the Golf R! Esp since it still comes in a MT.
I had a stage 3 A4 years back, it was great fun in boost and the surge from the turbo made it feel really fast, but a turbo 4-cyl is a different driving experience and you loose throttle response and immediacy. These new 2.0t's are much better than the old 1.8t's though.
I had a mk IV GTI and it was one of my favorite cars. Really fun to drive. I'd actually love to properly mod (turbo) a mk IV R32

Have you looked into the manual VII R's performance? The R/S3 were definitely designed for the DSG.

Yes DSG is better for launching... but I could never own a 4cyl with an auto trans.

Also got surprised by a Golf R, not long ago. He was Stage I and we jumped up on the onramp of a highway. He was in front of me, and I was surprised that I was actually pedal-to-the-floor and we were neck-and-neck. Once on the highway I had an advantage at higher speeds, but still...it was rough.

That said, a new Charger R/T Scat Pack was pushing me the other day, and after a 90 degree turn onto a highway onramp it looked like it just hit the breaks...left him far. He got up to my speed and I dusted him again, with ease. Still love my S4.

No question the Golf R is a great car. I looked at one for a while, but no matter how fast it is, your car will always look like a high school cheerleader's car. If I was in college, then I may go that route. As an adult, with a family, and a business... the Golf R looks awful.

    BUT... great performance.

Agreed, and the reason I could never buy one. For some reason, the look of the thing screams "Child" to me. I have friends that drive them, and no matter what they do or how successful and adult they are, when they get out of the car it still looks like they're excited for prom.

That's exactly what put me in an S4. When shopping I was looking at the Golf R, STI, Evo... and eventually just wrote them all off as childish.

Came down to the 335xi and the S4. There was no competition, the S4 is just leaps and bounds better (IMO).

When I showed the Golf R to my wife, her response was simply, "But are you nervous for your chemistry final in 4th period? What time is the pep rally?"

    Too funny.

Buddy recently moved from a sweet tuned R to a sweet tuned S3. He did great on the trade.

The R was just stupid fast, but the Audi is def more grown up, while also very quick. Quicker than my stock S4 for sure.

    11.0-11.29?
    mid 11's 11.3-11.7?
    High 11's 11.81-11.99?

lol, that's pretty funny. I had a coworker who had an R32 and Cayenne Turbo. I just picked up a Golf R as well. I wasn't interested in a sedan vis a vis the S3 as I traded my S4 on a 911 GTS several months ago. The Golf R will be my daily driver and I've enjoyed it quite a bit the last few days. But I buy cars for me not for other people to see me in them, I modify them for me too. Just my opinion

Only thing that kept me out of a Golf R was cargo length behind the front seats. Really enjoyed my R test drives. So much more fun to toss around than the S4. I had no issues with the lag- just had to keep it "on the boil" as they say.

If they brought a Golf R SportWagen with an MT to the US I would be all over that.
But they won't. Because my fellow American car buyers are idiots.

Man you guys are BRUTAL talking about the R being childish Its definitely the more grown up car when compared to an STI/EVO/RS. The R never crossed my mind about being childish, I was ready to take one over the S4 if a dealer was able to actually get one in, in less than 6 months which they weren't.

Then again, i'm pretty young so that probably explains the differing opinion on the R
