I have a 2002 1.8 Quattro 5 spd manual trans mission that the previous owner put in when converting from an automatic. The only numbers that bI can find on it are the 01A part number. If any one knows how to figure out what car the transmission came from it would help me a lot. Thank you any and all input.

    01A came from B5 A4 and B6 A4 5speed cars

Next question is there supposed to be a cross member with a mount or just the two side mounts sorry I guess that I should have thought ahead.

I purchased a 2002 1.8 Audi A 4 Quattro with a broken timing belt(TB). A previous owner had converted it from an automatic to a 5 speed manual. I fixed the TB and the car ran fantastic until one day while down shifting to make a hard right turn I shifted into 2nd gear and when I tried to engage the clutch there was nothing was there. I thought that I had missed 2nd gear so I tried it again no 2nd or any other gear for that matter. You could shift the transmission into any gear with the engine running without using the clutch. So I took the transmission out and found out that the center splined hub had broken free of the friction portion of the clutch disk. I was amazed the this car could have a component failure like this make no noise or give any indication that something like that had happened. The transmission is supported by two side mounts there is no movement and it appears to be adequately supported. I had a 2004 1.8 A 4 Quattro with a 6 speed manual and it had a cross member I was wondering if the 01A 5 speed manual transmission that is in my car is supposed to have a cross member with a mount as well and who ever installed the 5 spd didn't bother to install the cross member. I don't know how common it is to have the clutch disk break like that but I've been driving and abusing vehicles with standard transmission for 45 years and have never broken a clutch disk. I want to ensure that the transmission is properly supported in case that is why the clutch disk broke. The other thing that I noticed while taking the transmission out was that the three bottom bell housing bolts were not tight could that also be why the disk broke. Oh yeah to make things more interesting while I had the transmission out I decided to replace the rear main seal. The new seal had this nice plastic disk inside of the seal and being stupid I took out the disk and installed the seal. I installed everything and was extremely happy with the new single mass fly wheel, clutch, and pressure plate it worked really well. But not so happy with the oil leak caused by me being stupid and not understanding how to install the new seal. I've already started doing the whole thing again I will be good at transmission removal /installations and hopefully better at seal installation

the two side mounts are used off of a 2.8 B5 so you don't need to purchase the rear crossmember, they bolt right up to the automatic subframe that is in your car since it used to be an automatic. There should be a trans code on the bottom of the trans on a flat machined spot about 3/8" x 3/4" google it and it should tell you what kind of car its out of, I'm going to guess for simplicity sake its probably from a 2.8 B5.

Sounds like your new rear main seal is/was PTFE. Those can be pretty quirky if you're not used to them.
